    It's cold in here...

I'm now regretting having my system treated to try to shift some of the sludge from my under-performing radiators. From what I can conclude, the water pressure switch is now clogged up and so the gas valve won't open (WPS on my boiler sits on the control wire to the gas valve as a low-tech but almost fool-proof dry-fire prevention mechanism).

Oh well, plumber is due this week to re-flush the system anyway!

Still, permit me to say... BUMS!

At least it's a bit warmer now. Our central heating failed on new years day and wasn't fixed for two weeks.

Yeah I guess there is that, although it's pretty nippy out - only 4C right now - 15.7C in here.

Yeah I know what you mean. Here's hoping the power flush sorts it out - it did wonders for our system but it did take most of a day and the gas man replaced one section of piping.

If British Gas do a power flush it costs a lot of money!

    Re: It's cold in here...

I'll stick with an old fashioned sealed system & not a combi boiler system. Done the right way, it can still be energy efficient and a lot less problematical.

But they were a hell of a lot cheaper than the other quotes we got, and they did a damn fine job. I'd recommend them any day for a power flush.

    Re: It's cold in here...

On second analysis it looks like the pump is what's boned, its noise being conspicuous in its absence and the heat in the pump body despite it not moving water around.

Well, that and the spindle being frozen solid

Doesn't it cost approx £900 for a British Gas power flush? Is it really worth that?

Don't know the exact cost as landlords dealt with it, but they originally had a quotes from other people that the agency had supplied, and rejected them in favour of the British Gas one saying it was far cheaper.

Steve, we thought our pump had gone too, but it hadn't, it was just clogged up with sludge.

    Re: It's cold in here...

Yeah it's more likely sludge given the recent work, but the fact is I can't get the spindle turning - not that I have a decent screwdriver of the right size in this house.

I know British Gas quoted my brother £900 to do a power flush!

    Re: It's cold in here...

Just popped to the hardware store (2 minutes away - I LOVE where I live) and got a decent flat-head screwdriver. Managed to get the spindle turning. It were r8 stiff with all the crap in it.

    Still, I'm warm again!
