    My new website...

    Hello everybody,

I have just spent a couple of weeks tearing my hair out to get my site working! I gave up on supporting IE6 for now, and that will just redirect to my old site; it should work in all other browsers just fine.

I'd really appreciate it if you could look over it, and share your comments; particularly, if there are any obvious cock-ups, I'd appreciate a post with a screenshot, and details of your browser!

    Here we go: http://www.thousandeyes.co.uk/new_site/

Thanks in advance, I look forward to feedback!

    Re: My new website...

Looks great using Google Chrome on Windows 7. Only suggestion is the drop down menus at the top of the screen - I think it would be easier to navigate them if you changed the background colour slightly when the mouse rolls over them?

Apart from that, I love it. I used to make websites years ago so I understand your pain!

    Awesome sauce

The only bit i don't like is the fade on the boxes, i think a solid box with rounded corners would look nicer (only my opinion though )

    Looks great though

Do you have *any* idea how hard rounded boxes are to do on web-standards-compliant web sites?

As I said in your thread in the web dev forum, Kata, I really like the look of the site. If I have any spare time tomorrow I might give it a better look over and a few browsers and let you know if anything occurs to me, but AFAICT it's pretty solid

Would Ross be you by any chance?

Good for you is all I can say - as a pilot in training (gliders only, on my budget) - it's easy to understand where you get the thrill from! How many hours have you clocked up?

    Website looks schnazzy too

    Best of luck!

Yeah, that would be me I have just under 400 hours, and am heading off to the US this may to get my IR, and doubtless clock up another 50 or so. And then the trip - that'll be a few hours in itself!

    Re: My new website...

Great site, checked it on Firefox 3.5.8 and Internet Explorer 8, looks good on both. I would add screenshots but don't think I'm allowed to yet? Need 5 posts or more.

I noticed a few small errors.

    In the update section:
    XXX March 2010

    - New "Flight of a Thousand Eyes" website launched.
Unless it's meant to be like that. Also the link here doesn't work:
    22nd February 2010

    - "Flight of a Thousand Eyes" featured in popular aviation magazine LOOP Magazine. Read more here.
The 2 links under 'Latest News' don't work either.

Other than that it's a great site, it looks very professional and easy to use. I really like the countdown to the departure.

    Good luck with it all.

    Re: My new website...

Looks great, my observations would be:

    1. Links are the same colour as some highlighted text. I thought this was a no-no as it may confuse some people into thinking they are links?

    2. The home link at the top right links to index_rev_2.html which doesn't exist.

    3. Should the copyright information at the bottom right not include the © symbol, & # 1 6 9 ; (without spaces ofc, can't use it on the forums)?

Sorry if these have been pointed out, or are intentional.

    Re: My new website...

Allen - thankyou, this is exactly the type of useful feedback I need!

I see your point about the links. I'd like to keep the colours as they are; so perhaps it would be best if I underlined links, as well, to differentiate them.

Good idea on the copyright symbol! I'll do that right away.

    Link is fixed - thanks!

You can also use © for the copyright symbol, which is generally preferred as it is more easily understandable (e.g. if someone else needs to edit your website for some reason, they should know © is the copyright symbol: they might not know & #169; is...)

EDIT: I find it interesting that the forum software will automatically translate &#XXX into the relevant symbol but ignores the text character entities...

    Re: My new website...

Looks good and degrades nicely - however....

To re-iterate the above - people "read" the web by scanning for information, mostly for links. Links usually mean there is more info to be found - give them an ":active" state so they know where they've already been!

    1. Headings - You have no H1 tag at the beginning of the page. If you turn the images off, you have no idea what page you're on except the URL (which means people who aren't using images or styles will have no clue what page they're on!)
Make sure you've got "Web Developer" plugin for Firefox - turn off the styles and images and see if you know where you are!
    2. Headings again - You're using styling for your paragraph headings - e.g <p style="font-size: 1.5em; font-weight: bold; margin-left: 15px; text-align: left;">February 22nd 2010 - Flight of a Thousand Eyes in LOOP</p> - again, screen readers will interpret this page of text as lots of continuing paragraphs - which isn't what you're trying to achieve!
    3. Links - You can read the article here. Is an accessibility no-no - the link should have some sort of context in it - Read the article - *insert title*
    4. Read up on CSS classes and ID's - inline styles can't be overwritten by accessible stylesheets.

Just a quick one, I've got plenty more... As it's for a charity - I'll give it a good look over tonight for you.

(XHTML and CSS validation don't mean much if it's not accessible... read the WCAG guidelines for some inspiration)

OK, I didn't know that. I thought (but then I'm no expert) that it would be best to use the correct ASCII HTML code. I'll remember that one.
