    Monthly Expenses - Sorted, thankyou!

Anyone able to help me out a little here..
Just trying to figure out what my monthly expenses are likely to be as I'm to move shortly.
So if there's anyone living alone in a 1-2 bedroom flat our house, if it's not too nosey could you let me know what you're paying for electricity, water, gas, TV License, phone line and internet?
Oh and anything else if I've overlooked it.
    Very appreciative of any replies

Re: Monthly Expenses - Single Flat

Not a problem... will hook it out for you later.

Straight from my monthly spreadsheet... (this is however for me + housemate so take it as an upper scale - v energy efficient flat though)
    2 bed 2 bath flat

    Energy - Gas and Electric - £50
    Water - £42
Council tax on 2 bed flat in MK - £103
TV licence - £12.12 (after the initial 6 months DD)
    Contents insurance - £17
Phone - £20 (BT full package)
Internet - £10 (but I can only get a 2mb line here so I go for the cheapy package - 40Gb limit)

Total monthly bills excluding mortgage came to about £350 before food when I was living with my ex-wife. Heating was entirely electic

    One bedroom flat per month:

    £80.00 ... Electric (no gas)
    £15.00 ... Water
£12.12 ... BBC Tax (TV Licence)
    £12.79 ... BT Tax (Landline)
£39.00 ... Broadband, Phone and Sky HD package
    £09.50 ... Contents Insurance

Council Tax on there too but you'll want to check yours locally.

Re: Monthly Expenses - Single Flat

My rent will be £700pm, my housing benefit covers the council tax and £552.32pm of the rent (I'm disabled).
My income from Income Support and Disability Living Allowance is approximately £110pw / £440pm.
So after covering the extra £150 of the rent I'm left with £390 to cover all the utilities, food for me and food for a Chinese Water Dragon :3
I don't need a phone line for anything other than internet, not sure if that makes it cheaper in any way? Not bothered about insurance.
Am I missing anything out at all?

You'll need a landline if you're wanting broadband so you'll still have the BT Tax. You can get line rental cheaper elsewhere but if you want to change provider in the future, it'll cost you more.

That list pretty much covers my basics. Obviously there's still things like car/transport expenses, food, clothing, hobbies etc.

As for insurance, I've come home to an empty flat before and I've started over more than once. It's not cheap trying to replace what you've lost. Personal choice, I'd sooner pay little and often and feel reasured that it won't take years to rebuild.

If you're signing up to new services, make sure you have a look at doing it through something like QuidCo (Edit: I've had £426 back in the last two and a half years ).

True that, it's just with my disability I'm not out much, luckily the house is next door to a shop which the landlord owns and is there all day every day, plus it's 3 doors down from my sister and 5 from my parents.. and I have a guard lizard!

I'm not 100% certain if it has gas, I'll have to take a trip down there tomorrow to speak to the guy so I can alter any calculations.

Re: Monthly Expenses - Single Flat

Gas and Electric £50-70 depending on time of year, this is for a largeish 2bed flat (80sqm+)
    Water annual £255
    Insurance annual £150
Council tax is normally £1,800 per annum, but you can get a single persons discount of 10%

Things like TV, Phone and Net really can be as much or as little as you want!

Re: Monthly Expenses - Single Flat

Not an expenses breakdown as I live in a semi with a mortgage, but here's a few monthly cost I allow for that haven't been mentioned. Some may apply to you:

    Mortgage (Halifax)
    Council Tax
    Yorkshire Water
    Gas ( British Gas)
    Electricity (British Gas)
    TV Licence
    Phone (BT) & Broadband (o2)
    Home & Contents Insurance (Paragon)
    Food (optional )
    Petrol / Travel Costs
    02 - Mobile Phone
Mortgage Insurance (MMS + Friends Provident)
Car Insurance (Privilege til 12pm 21 May '10)
    MOT & Service
    Car Tax
    Car Replacements
    Haircut

This gives you a faily comprehensive "cost of living" beyond which you'll need to pay for:

    New shoes / clothes
    Holidays
    Nights out
    Non-essentials (new computer etc.)
    DVD/CD purhcases
    Christmas presents / Birthday presents

Re: Monthly Expenses - Single Flat

Suddenly the 460 Euros that I pay per year in Council tax for my 90m2 apartment in Den Haag doesn't seem so bad!

Still doesn't make up for the 52% income tax though

I'd give you a breakdown, but being in Holland, I suspect it wouldn't be much use to you.

My rent will be £700pm, my housing benefit covers the council tax and £552.32pm of the rent (I'm disabled).
If you get those benefits, i would expect you to be council tax exampt anyway.

Re: Monthly Expenses - Single Flat

I spoke to the council begrudgingly yesterday (oh they're so rude) but anyway.. I miscalculated the housing benfit they'll cover, they'll cover approximately £600 of the rent cost.

I'm pretty confident I can deal with all the utilities now but there's been some problems with the property in which the landlord is having trouble evicting the current tenant despite notice being given long ago so it's a case of waiting now, I don't want to search for more properties as this one is near to perfect for me.

Re: Monthly Expenses - Single Flat

This thread's due a bump as the property has now become available again.
I've put in an offer at £650 per calendar month which has been verbally accepted, no contract signed untill I account for all costs and verify everything with the council.

This is what I have so far per calendar month.

    Rent - 650
    Gas & Electric - 100
    Phoneline - 11.54
    Water - 33.50
    TV Licence - 12.12
    Internet - 20
Mobile phone (already on contract) - 22.50
Council tax - Told that this will be covered in full due to my "benefits"
    Total - 849.66pm
LHA (Local Housing Allowance) - 593pm
    Leaving - £256pm to pay
    IS & DLA - £487pm

Leaving me with - 231pm for food/pet lizard food, toiletries, cigerettes (don't mind quitting), misc and insurance is the only other thing I've left out, unless there's anything else I missed or mis-calculated which is very possible having been staring at all these numbers for so long.
