I know there are a few plane fans here on Hexus - I saw this and thought some Hexalites might like it...
It's an astonishing Soviet plane rotting away, some really great pics:

Great pics what a monster. But somehow the rot makes it look beautiful not sad. Good one.
Well its designed to sort of fly. Its an ekranoplan
I've never seen one outside of some short black and white film clips of it 'flying', nice find and fascinating pictures.
I wonder what the MPG is ...
It flies?
It uses ground effect to get off the surface of the water so you could say that it flies... just not very high (I think it was around six or seven feet, I'm probably wrong but it's been a while, apparently it's 'wings' simply aren't big enough to generate sufficient lift).
Some really cool shots there, really wish I could read the article tbh. It doesn't look like it's been properly mothballed though, just left to rot which is a shame![]()
It's not so much that, it's the weight of the thing. It was meant to be a troop carrier - got more in common with a hovercraft than a plane in that regard. I doubt you could make the wings big enough to make it into a proper plane.
They just pulled the funding, after the KM crashed in 1980 - not the reason, it was just a convenient excuse. They've been pretty much just lying around since then, waiting to fall to pieces.
I think they were know as Caspian Sea Monsters. I think that they were made as fast sea going invasion craft.
They were fast and because of 'flying' so close to the sea they would have been under the scope of radar.
They, in typical Russian style, just crashed a lot.
Don't know about that, it's a little unfair. The KM crashed due to pilot error, admittedly, but from what I can gather the problem was more a change in leadership than anything else... the idea of spending millions on potential military projects was no longer deemed viable and that was the end of that.
I'm almost bitter about it, it was a machine with so much potential... canned far too early on.
Does anyone remember Empire of Steel on the Mega Drive?
That's really cool in an absurd, far-fetched way. The weathering adds to the sci-fi appearance.
Ah! A Caspian Sea Monster. Incredible photos. Like the earlier posters, I too really wished this programme wasn't scrapped - it looked full of potential.
think iv only seen it from above on google maps so ta OP
