    Legal highs

Anyone here take so called "legal highs" when they are out on the town?

    In other words M-CAT (Mephadrone)

Please do yourself a favour... Don't...

Just because it is legal doesn't mean it is safe, by any length...

I don't understand how something like this is legal, but cannabis is still illegal.

Anyone here ever tried 'alcohol' on a night out in town?

    Do yourself a favour... DON'T.

It kills thousands of people every year in the UK alone, and is responsible for addiction, underage pregnancy and broken homes all over the world.

    Re: Legal highs

Every weekend, youngsters are huddling in dark and sweaty rooms, listening to droning, repetitive music and consuming potentially lethal doses of this 'alcohol'

Afterwards, they often have unprotected sex. This drug is known to cause irrational feelings of violence, often leading to huge brawls. The addictive nature of this drug is clear - youths consume it weekend after weekend, and some even partake during weekdays.

    Re: Legal highs

I genuinely do not see what's so addictive about alcohol (I know alcoholics will disagree). I can (and have) spent a whole year without touching the thing. Not sure if I would feel the same way about 'harder' things - though I am not sure if I want to find out.

As above, the same thing can be said about alcohol - they opted into taking it (most probably - the news doesn't suggest otherwise) and as cruel/cold as it may seem its there own fault.

Lighters are legally sold in shops - doesn't mean I should set myself on fire

    Re: Legal highs

I drink regularly on a social level, pint or two in the pub a couple of times a week. I'll often have a glass of port or wine if i'm at home. Am I addicted? No. It's something nice to go with dinner or a small tipple before bed (port makes me sleepy), but It's something I could live without. Obviously people do get addicted to alcohol, but you need to be drinking a lot regularly and certainly it's less addictive than something like mephedrone.

These "legal highs" on the other hand are worrying. Very little is actually known about them - compared to alcohol - and at least when you buy a pint, you are (or should be) aware that it's gone through a quality assurance program and it's not got any unnecessary nasties. Presumably these things aren't available in the shops so you're basically buying them from a dealer.

I don't see how they're even comparable to be honest.

That is the point - why would you try something that isn't vetted other than the fact it says "not for human consumption" on the very bottles it comes from. In comparison with alcohol you know the possible effects and if something goes wrong those at A&E know how to deal with it.

It isn't bought from a 'dealer' in the typical sense unless your local garden centre sells Horse as well.

Play with feathers your going to get your arse tickled - people just need to decide if they like tickling or not.

There's a huge gulf in educated awareness between them though. You are educated enough to know that you will set yourself on fire if you do certain things. Most people are also educated enough to know what effect alcohol can have physically, mentally and socially (though more could be done). What do you think the general education level is for M-CAT? The law is a fairly blunt tool that strives to take some of the decision making out of things where education/sensibility is lacking, but in things like this it just can't keep up, so we really do need better education.

How do you know that exactly? It's a very similar chemical compound to ecstacy/MDMA and neither of those drugs are addictive.

The second part of your argument is exactly why drugs like these should be legalised and regulated, IMO.

I can say exactly the same thing about cannabis, tobacco, cocaine, amphetamines, MDMA etc...this is why we usually rely on actual scientific and medical research rather than anecdotal evidence. Alcohol is indeed very addictive and dangerous, one shouldn't need to personally become alcoholic to accept that as fact. Someone will dig out that list of drugs ranked according to their inclusive harm, I'm sure. Alcohol is one of the worst.

Format is spot on above, BTW
