Youth hostels are quite hit and miss despite my praise of that one in Switzerland (I'll dig out the name if you decide you want to go there!) I've found tripadvisor quite good, but googling the name is always worth the effort.
As for the cheap coach tickets, depends where you want to go, its often best to do it that way round. Coaches are a lot cheaper but will take at least twice the time of the train, often more, so its not a bad idea if you've got plenty of time (and there are plenty of sleeper coaches too).
further to what I said in PM, once you know where your going, try looking for night coaches. Sleep on the coach and you've rounded your two greatest costs (accomodation and transport) into one.
Going round a place on a shoestring budget is quite fun so long as you don't have great expectations.
