Okay just thought id put this up here and hope to get some help.
Last year around june time i took the GF to London for weekend, went round all the museums, sight seeing, London dungeons etc.
She hinted yesterday about doing another trip this year... and i have spent about two hours thinking and come up blank.
Anyone got any ideas?
Can not be outside of UK as my passport is expired now.
And must be in reasonable student budget i.e. around £200ish.
So any ideas would be really grateful.
You looking to do this around June time again? If so York's just up the road and is a nice place to spend a day or 2, dependent on the interests you 2 have.

York sounds good, what is there to see in York?
There's the Minster (an awesome building regardless of your feelings towards organised religion), the city walls are a pleasant way to spend a sunny afternoon (and working up an appetite for some serious nommage), the NRM (if you're interested in the nation's industrial heritage), the Art Gallery isn't bad, the Yorkshire Museum reopens on 1 August and is well worth a trip if you can put it off, Clifford's Tower and the Castle Museum. The river cruises can be nice too. If you're interested in theatre there's a couple (Theatre Royal and Grand Opera House), and there's also a couple of decent places to go and see music and standup. If the London Dungeon is your kinda thing we has the York Dungeon too, but I've never been as it's really not my kind of thing.
Avoid the Viking Centre though: while it's interesting it's nowehere near worth the entry fee.
I suppose I should now ask the local tourist information board for my fee ;) - seriously though, it's a lovely place to sepnd a weekend even if you're *not* interested in history.
Devon/Cornwall are lovely.
If you both have railcards, you could go to Edinburgh Friday- Sunday in early june for just under £200 which would get you both return train travel and budget hotel (not inc spending money)
+1 for edinburgh, me and the gf are going this weekend with a stop at the lakes on the way home.

£200 shouldn't rule out Europe at all, i'm off to Iceland next weekend on that cost, and its one of the most expensive capitals in Europe!

You don't need a young persons railcard to go to plenty of places in the EU, you can get to france/belgium for £40-60 return!
Failing that try the international coach system, You can get as far as Romania for £15 return I hear, Personally i'd love to see the peoples palace!
Also don't forget the youth hostels, when in Laussene I stayed in a really great place for the equivalent of £8 a night, we had our own little balcony and all (I was going through a phase of saying a girl should be able to enjoy a get away without it costing much!)
I'd agree with this in general, but York Archaeological Trust (who run Yorvik) also have a location called "DIG" in one of the churches in the city centre, which has reconstructed achaeological digs you can have a trowel around in (they're full of rubber "earth" to dig out of the way as you search for artefacts :D) and they do a combined ticket to both that and Yorvik, which is a slightly more cost-effective way of doing it. If you're on a tight budget, though, I'd recommend doing DIG rather than Yorvik.Quote:

Edinburgh is a pretty good place to spend a weekend, though can get quite pricey at times. If not, there's a tonne of different towns with some odd local history, places like York, Bath, Cambridge etc can be nice.
Personally I've had some good days out in Cambridge, especially if the weather's nice as a relaxing punt tour of the city is a great way for a couple to spend some time together :)

Youth hostels are quite hit and miss despite my praise of that one in Switzerland (I'll dig out the name if you decide you want to go there!) I've found tripadvisor quite good, but googling the name is always worth the effort.
As for the cheap coach tickets, depends where you want to go, its often best to do it that way round. Coaches are a lot cheaper but will take at least twice the time of the train, often more, so its not a bad idea if you've got plenty of time (and there are plenty of sleeper coaches too).
Time isn't a problem, i just said weekend as its generally cheaper. As for places to go i haven't got a clue, id love to go anywhere beyond England i have only ever been to Austria so anywhere else would be amazing to see.Quote:

Going round a place on a shoestring budget is quite fun so long as you don't have great expectations.
