Good Sat na with Speed camera detection
Hi, im looking to buy a sat nav for my dad and one of the main requirements is that he wants one with a built in speed camera detection for traveling in the UK.
what is the cheapest and best one that fits my dads needs?
Another feature is the text size needs to be of decent or fully adjustable so that my dad can read it clearly.
my budget is around £120.
Thanks in advance.
Re: Good Sat na with Speed camera detection
Does that budget include subscription charges for say a year?
Re: Good Sat na with Speed camera detection
I had a Garmin Nuvi which was stolen last week but was very accurate in detecting speed cameras, cant fault it.
I have also used Co-Pilot on my old XDA Orbit II phone, and that was pretty good.

the speed camera detection.
your budget's awfully tight bud.
Re: Good Sat na with Speed camera detection
Whatever solution you go for, you have to pay a subs for the speed camera updates every year. You will probably get a month trial with a new Sat nav but after that you need to pay up more so you get the updates on camera locations.
Re: Good Sat na with Speed camera detection
Which is why garmin nuvi should be your choice. You buy the thing, it works for as long as you have it, and if you want to update it will cost you just over £100, but thats a lifetime update licence which you can use forever.
Re: Good Sat na with Speed camera detection
Or your dad could just make sure he sticks to the speed limits :O_o1:? ;)
Seriously, it's not like you don't get warning signs by the road for fixed speed cameras, and the detection systems (as I understand it) wouldn't be able to tell you about mobile cameras anyway...?
Re: Good Sat na with Speed camera detection
Ahh i see. i diddnt know their was a subscription charge for speed camera. I'l inform him about this. i dont think he is too fussed about one. i and myself thought these new sat navs come with them standard and only the live traffic update you had to pay for.
Anyways which brand is better? tom tom, garmin nuvi or another brand?

Not always the case. Often when driving on new routes its difficult to keep up with the speed limits whilst at the same time not getting lost and not crashing into anyone. This is made more difficult at night with rain hammering down on your steamed up windscreen.
Anyway, there is a clear advantage to having speed camera detection, I would justify having one just for driving on the north circular, theres a 29 mile stretch of road with 27 cameras, thats almost 1 camera per mile.

Like I said before, there is no subscription for the speed camera detection on the Garmin Nuvi, but if new speed cameras come along you will need to update the maps, which costs just over £100 for a liftime subsciption, giving you unlimited updates. You wont really need an update anytime soon if you buy a new up to date sat nav.

Cheers, does any of the latest models have speed camera detection or is it specific models only?
Good thing you mentioned the north circular because my dad drives their weekdays.
How exactly does it get the updates from? the usual gps signal?

Be careful with the wording here - none of the GPS based satnavs being talking about will have camera detection. Instead they will use a pre-entered database of current locations - local govt are obliged to publish the location of fixed safety cameras, and areas where mobile cameras operate. These locations are compiled and the maps updated with the locations.

Thanks, so in a nutshell these sat navs have them build it on the maps much like POS stuff?

Exactly.
Re: Good Sat na with Speed camera detection
Scan have a selection in their Today Only section mate, so if yer quick you might get a bargain :)
Re: Good Sat na with Speed camera detection
Seems cheaper here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Wides...9269028&sr=8-1
Doesnt indicate what map version it includes though but i imagine it will have the latest one ie 2010 version?
Re: Good Sat na with Speed camera detection
Thats the garmin nuvi I had, its brilliant.
Re: Good Sat na with Speed camera detection
Cool thanks. i may order it but is it true that the WT version is the one with the lifetiem sub of live traffic updates?
the one linked on amazon is the 255W version only :(
however, when viewing the official site their is no 255w version.
Only the 255 https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=13428 or the 255w(T) https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=13431
edit: migght consider this tom tom http://www.amazon.co.uk/TomTom-Route.../ref=de_a_smtd
£10 more i guess but suppose to have a better navigation and voice compared to the garmin ones.
It also has the speed camera databases but not the live traffic updates which is not really that imprtant for my dad as he really wants the speed camera detection.
i have also read that the garmin ones dont actually tell you by voice the speed limit when approaching a speed camera. i think the tom tom one does?
