It's not just microsoft at fault with browsers then!

Should a government really be making statements like this anyway? I always see the internet as a bit like survival of the fittest, if something happens to you, you probably deserve it, and yes I've had one or two bits of malware caught by my security software, years ago of course

Ah, but the function of government is to take the money of the intelligent and successful, and use it to look after the lowest common denominator...we lost 'Survival of the fittest' years ago.

How long till there's a government-approved browser then?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8376555.stm shows it's more than just every man for himself. Maybe it's the governments behind viruses etc

If the Germans get their way they'll be changing browsers on a daily basis to suit the moronic whims of the government.

Just wait for the headline "Germany bans the Internet"
    Moo.

    I don't see the problem

They see security issues in IE and warn against its use _ until its fixed.

They see security issues in Firefox and warn against its use _ until its fixed.

Next Browser which has unpatched security issues will also be flagged _ until its fixed.

The beauty of having choice is that you can switch - even if only temporarily - to a more secure browser until your favourite has been patched then you can switch back.

And having lots of browser choice prevents 1 unpatched vulnerability spreading uncontrollable to every machine - just relax and enjoy the variety

except in this instance "more secure" actually means "has unknown security issues and is not guaranteed to be any more secure". The fact that a particular browser doesn't currently have a disclosed security issue doesn't mean that it is secure. Frankly these German government advisories are more likely to dissuade browser manufacturers from disclosing known vulnerabilities until they're fixed, rather than making people aware of the dangers.

Using computers at all is unsecure. The internet is extremely unsecure. Email is ridiculously unsecure (hands up how many people have been issued with "new passwords" by facebook recently? ) - and I suspect that the vast majority of virus infections are actually caused by the incompetence of the user, rather than someone using a really clever browser hack against them. At least Microsoft and Mozilla are honest enough to say "watch out guys, we've discovered that there's this issue with our browser: we'll fix it as soon as possible but in the mean time be careful when you're browsing".

Most of the time it's not the PC at fault as such, but the end users clicking willy-nilly on anything and everything that pops up and flashes at them.

I say bring out a compulsory 'PC' test for them to all do. If they fail then they need schooling on the ways of using the internet with a bit of common sense, because it appears the majority of users loose theirs when sat on a chair infront of a keyboard.

There are going to be weaknesses in all browsers, but the major flaw in all of them is going to be the biological matter sat in the chair

Yeah, I know - I kind of covered that with a sneaky ninja second post

Give a worker internet access, and you give them an easy way to waste the day away.

Most don't actually need more than email (and even that is often abused by continuous silly mails between friends IMO). People never abused the telephone for personal calls as much as they do an internet connection. The easier it is to get away with it the more people do it </rant>

But oh, we're talking about security here aren't we?
