    My recent trip to Thailand

I'd been wanting to see Thailand for quite a while, so after a bit of saving and good timing I managed to pick up two return tickets from Manchester to Bangkok for £376, the only drawback to the good price was two pretty lengthy waits in the airport in Doha for the connecting flights, but other than that, very pleased

I had four months to map out an itinerary, make reservations, and scrape together enough money to cover the cost of the trip whilst still having enough money to live on (I'm an apprentice so may wages are pretty much minimum wage.)... I managed ok I guess, i'd worked out that £600 per person should be more than enough to cover three weeks on a budget.

So, here's my holiday in pictures, for you to

    Jan 30th - Feb 2nd. Flight & Arrival

    Some geekery on the plane

Our first wait was in Doha airport, as it was the middle of the night there were no other kids around so I figured it'd be more fun to sleep in the play area.
The girlfriend seemed to like the idea too.

Our flight was around 7.30am local time, so the sun had come up and I managed to see what Doha looked like. Plain and magnolia are the only words I can use to describe it.

    Bangkok airport. Touchdown!

Amidst the chaos, adrenaline and jetlag, we almost jumped straight into one of that taxis waiting outside the main doors, but the price tag of B1000 (£20) to our hotel was well over the odds even by our standards!

B300 (£6) later and we arrived at our hotel. First impressions were a bit of nervousness, but as we would learn, the conditions of our area are no worse than anywhere else in Bangkok... not that it is a bad place, but the air there literally stinks, and which such a huge population, rubbish and litter is never too far out of sight.

The hotel had a pretty cool looking Tuk Tuk parked outside, the provide free lifts to the Skytrain, which we took advantage of the next day.

The room looked as well as it did online, and was gererally pretty nice... and it had the hottest shower we had on the entire trip ()

We went for a walk after we'd had a shower... I needed to find some food and have a look around! I wasn't about to go to bed after waiting 6 months!

I took this overlooking the traffic from a raised crossing... Very much a neccesity.

After stopping at the 7-11 (The first of MANY!) we decided to have our first encounter of street food. No time like the present and all that.

The next day we used the skytain and got off in Siam Square, in my mind it's pretty much Bangkok's shopping center, but with that said, you can buy anything, anywhere...

    Advertising is everywhere. Just... everywhere.

... it seems I can only post 20 images in one post so i'm going to post each stage of the trip in a seperate reply. And this is taking so long I doubt i'll finish it tonight!

Looks fantastic so far, a few friends of mine have been and have always raved about the place, I guess it's on my "To Do" list!

    Looking forward to further pics...

Re: My recent trip to Thailand

Feb 2nd - Feb 3rd. Bangkok to Ko Samui
The first stop was Ko Samui, an island far away enough for us to be able to save on a nights accomodation by taking the overnight train to the pier. The total cost was just over B1000, which included the train journey, the bus to the pier, and the boat to the island. It can be gotten cheaper, but we opted for an air conditioned train.

Before we got the train we had the afternoon to waste, so these are the pictures from our last day in Bangkok for a few weeks.

The Canon shop in MBK center is... cluttered, but full of win.

We went to the Siam Paragon center and... nothing is cheap here. Aside from the massive amount of high end shops, there is an aquarium in the basement, an imax cinema on the top floor... and a series of car showrooms, and a gym, and...

Just so you can get an idea of it's size.

    Inside...

After enough window shopping and being worn out with the backpacks, it was finally time to get to the train station to start our journey. The trip to the island was a small adventure in itself, and is pretty much the only way to get there other than a flight. Train (Or bus) to Surat Thani, bus to Don Sak pier, boat to Ko Samui.

A ten minute taxi ride from the pier and we were dropped off at the sign to our accomodation. I knew it was in the hills overlooking the beach and island, but I had no idea how far from the road it was so I called them to come and pick us up.

After 5 minutes a pickup (L200) with benches in the back arrived to pick us up, the ride up was bumpy and steep, but much fun!

When we did get to the Jungle Club, we were taken back. It was most certainly the best place we stayed during the whole holiday... the views, the staff, the grounds... it was all just fantastic. Not a bad word to say about this place at all. Infact, I fully intend to stay here again!

Did you have a chance to go to Pattaya? Found it loads of fun last time I went (although that was a few years ago).

I love Koh Samui. Not surprised you seem to have done so too. Jungle club looks pretty cool. I used to stay at the Royal Blue Lagoon, but that's been developed now and I prefer to be a bit off the track. I may look in at Jungle Club next trip.

Re: My recent trip to Thailand

    Ko Samui
Our time on Ko Samui was spent relaxing at the Jungle Club, although we did rent a bike for a day and did a lap of the island to see some of the sights... A huge Buddah, a waterfall, the island itself, etc.

    The Jungle Club:

    Big Buddah

    'Waterfall 2'

    Feb 6th - 8th. Ko Phangan
After 3 nights on Ko Samui we set off fo Ko Phangan, a short boat ride away... we spent two nights here; We didn't see much of the island, maybe it was the heat, or how chilled out everyone else was had rubbed off on us, but hanging around by the beach was good enough

    Ko Phangan pier

We stayed at a place called Coco Gardens, it was a nice place, right on the beach, very relaxed and owned by a couple of british expats so a full english was on the menu

    Our bungalow

    The view

    Feb 8th - Feb 10th. Ko Tao.
The last stop on the Gulf Coast was Ko Tao, the smallest of the three islands, and the least developed. We stayed at a place called Coral View. Ko Tao is known for it's dive sites, and we were staying right by one known as 'Shark Island' (A small island a few hundred yards out from the beach. We got a few pictures with an underwater digital camera i'd bought for my girlfriend, but that managed to let water in and break within a few hours... so that was somewhat dissapointing.

    Anyway, pictures:

The view from our hut at Coral View... not as amazing as some of the others we stayed at, but still a beautful scene.

    Down on the beach

I'd heard of a place called Eagle View which was not too far from our accomodation, less than 1km on foot, albeit uphill (A steep! hill at that), so I dragged the girlfriend there. Worth it! Food was incredible... the 'resteraunt' is basically a fishermans home... he goes out at night to catch the fish, and you come during the day (or evening at sunset especially) and his wife will cook for you. Everything is extremelly cheap, with the catch of the day being the most expensive item on the menu at B200 per person (£4 to you and me). Other than the fish, nothing on the menu cost more than £1.40... jesus christ.

    The view

We didn't see Pattaya actually, i'd tried to avoid any of the notoriously seedy places like Pattaya and Phuket, not because i'm a prude, but you know... travelling with the girlfriend and all that, didn't really want to be surrounded by that kind of thing. Although I realize now not to base my travels on the tales of others and just go and explore for myself and make my own mind up, so I may see Pattaya at the end of this year when I go back... alone... for much longer

I would thoroughly reccomend it... I cannot see anybody being dissapointed with that place, a real hidden gem... I can't wait to go back!
