I've been abseiling when someone 'forgot' to hold the safety rope at the top. good job i was holding onto the other rope that was tied to me, went to the top, around a loop thing and then back to me again. I was effectively holding up my own weight. I weigh 15st and have weak upper body strength, if i'd let go then it would've been 'bye bye me'.
had a fear of heights ever since (even standing on a chair i get scared)
never ever ever going bungee jumping for the reason thats in the video. (I'm a scaredy-pants wuss)
Damn, I thought my experience was bad;
I was top roping up a wall near our uni and the guy chosen to belay for me (based on similar heights) was doing a grand job, but when I was just about to complete the overhang, one of the hand holds twisted and I fell. There was a fair bit of slack in the rope so had a bit of a fall, and it was then when I saw my belayer flying past me as I was falling down the weight difference became evident!
am so glad there was a crash mat at the bottom cause I hit it hard, my belayer then had to abseil down to ground level
funny in hindsight but I've never been so glad to get to the bar for a stiff drink though
with top roping, there shouldn't really be much cause for the belayer to go flying high....with lead climbing, I can understand it.
Was there a massive weight difference between you two?
------------
On diff subject, I only climb with peeps who don't mix smoking dope with climbing. Seen that happen before, with near fatal consequences.
eg top belayer not tied in, because so caught up being cool with the weed![]()

Ooh, I have a relevant story. When I was really young (5, maybe 6), I once went to the balcony after a rainy night. I slid, and because the floor wasn't flat, I slid outward. The lower part of the balcony had a gap, wide enough a child to fall through. And I almost did. I caught myself from falling when my entire body was already hanging out (think cliffhanger). At the time I had no concept of death, so I considered that it would've been easier to just let go and 'fall into the pool' instead of pulling myself back in. Two problems with that idea: first, I was on the 12th floor, so it's probably high enough for me to go 'splat' even if I'd fallen into the pool. Secondly, the pool isn't actually right below, even though from the height it looked that way.
Only thing that prevented me from removing myself from the gene pool? Fear of being scolded by my mum if I had 'fallen down and came back through the front door'. So I mustered the strength to pull myself up, and went back in as if nothing happened (soaking wet aside). A few days later, I asked my mum what would happen if I try to jump into the pool from the 12th floor (without mentioning what happened - incidentally, up until then, I had no fear of height whatsoever, and many time contemplated 'trying' that - yeah, you can say Darwin Award candidate), and was first introduced to the word 'death'. After that, I started having a bit more respect for height, and no longer stood at the edge of the balcony looking down on that pool
And yet, last year I decided to go bungee jumping to re-conquer that fear (and for the thrills). And you know what? I would love it if they would do something like that to me - what's the point of paying for the thrill if you aren't going to fear for your life![]()

Oooooh! watching that has reinforced my belief that my feet stay firmly on terra firma thank you!I like safe activities like drinking tea and eating biscuits, though those aren't without risks I know.
If you need more reinforcing, try this one instead

I've seen that video before, and I still nearly shat myself... <shudders>
I've been doing rock climbing and I've never seen that happen before.. The rope going up and the hoop thing makes the guy on the floor weigh about 1.6x his weight due to the friction and stuff.. So there must've been a big difference.
Should've strapped one of the big sandbag things to him really![]()
Evil, but funny.
