    Cheap Flights to New Zealand?

Hi guys me and a few friends are looking to go to New Zealand on the last week of august for 3 weeks and are looking to try and find cheap flights.

We are going from Belfast and want to fly to Auckland. Currently the cheapest we have got is £960. Does anyone know of any sites etc that they could be cheaper? We are all students and we like to save a few bob if possible

kayak is my favourate, very good when ur not fixed on dates.

Failing that, try going from a UK airport, it might be cheaper to holiday one day either side there.

But also remember its a bloody long way! You might also want to consider taking a day out in Hong Kong or something too.

Re: Cheap Flights to New Zealand?

Many thanks TheAnimus. In truth we did say we might stay in Hong Kong for a day or two so that would be good as none of us have been there before. Ill check going from the uk instead. I know we have to fly to england first anyway regardless so I'll give that site you recommended a look. Thanks again.

You can also save a lot by being flexible on dates, and avoiding holidays, Mondays and Fridays.

Re: Cheap Flights to New Zealand?

I've had success with SkyScanner before, they seem to come up with some unusual routings to get good fares.

They also pull data from the budget airlines, but this probably isn't relevant for long haul.

Re: Cheap Flights to New Zealand?

Last year we used Qantas from Heathrow to Bangkok to Sydney to Auckland and it was about £700 return, whereas my dad went with Air New Zealand through Hong Kong (He collects air miles with them) and it cost over £1,100.

It's probably cheaper to book in advance. When I went in 2008, I booked the night before going and it was £1,350.

Remember that UK summer/UK winter are the most expensive times because of demand. It might be worth going a couple of weeks later in September if your time is flexible. Even just picking a different day in the same week could be cheaper.

    RE: Long haul.

Drink lots of water on the flight. Air New Zealand regularly went around with jugs of water, Qantas supplied it when asked. Drink as much as you can. You forget that it's been a full day across the flight, in which time you would normally drink two litres.

Take your shoes off. The blood pools in your feet and makes shoes tight and uncomfortable.

Wear eye masks and ear plugs. The plugs got a bit uncomfortable after a while, but they really help stop the fatigue from a constant whine.

Take a short walk every now and then. It keeps the blood moving, stops cramp, and reduces the irritation of not doing anything in the same position. Also gives you a chance to readjust your clothes, where the seams might have started digging in.

Wear loose clothes. I was amazed by the number of people dressed up for a night at the Ritz with full makeup, jewellery, "fashionable" clothing which I wouldn't want to wear for more than a few hours. No one cares if you look like you're bumming around the house. I usually wear cargo pants to keep things ready in my pockets, but that just meant the trousers got twisted and uncomfortable. Don't do that.

In 2008 I went over by myself in economy but unfortunately so did a large group of teenage rugby players. They were very loud through the whole thing and someone kept knocking my head every time they went to yell a conversation with their friend behind me. I had to make a connection to Wellington but missed what the flight attendant was saying about it being late over the PA because some of the rugby players were busy playing Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and shouting answers to each other. I was seriously considering punching them but decided to have a go at the adults they were with instead. I had to get a different flight to Wellington 5 hours later because I missed the instructions. Total time from getting to Heathrow to leaving Wellington Airport was 35 hours.

I flew back with my dad who used his air miles to upgrade me to Pacific Economy (Business class). God, what a difference! It's amazing what a few extra inches of leg room and a properly reclining seat can make. I actually slept. Obviously not an option for the majority of people.

Last year, for the leg between Bangkok and Heathrow I was put by myself away from my family. The person in front had their seat as far back as possible for the whole flight. When I ate, I had half a handspan between my nose and their seat. The person next to me developed a gag-inducing smell after a couple of hours, and the person behind me must have been 11 feet tall because I was playing footsie with them for most of it, and getting kneed in the back for the rest.

The journey there and back is terrible, but it's definitely worth it. I love New Zealand and want to go back eventually. It's so nice to walk on pavements with barely any chewing gum, where rough, rebelious looking teenage skateboarders apologise for bumping into you, shopworkers smile and say coherent words instead of grunting the amount you owe them, restaurants are cheap, and the air is clean. I don't know if it's a case of the grass being greener, but I'm sure the sky is a darker blue and stays the same shade right to the horizon. But in Britain it's pale blue from straight up, blending into brown on the horizon.

Definitely try to get an aisle seat. I'm 5' 8" but even my knees were only an inch or two from the seat in front. When people talk about seats only being an inch wider, or whatever, it really does make a difference. Economy seats are designed for tesselation, but people change shape. The most irritating thing is when you instinctively try stretching your legs out but can't because your feet only move forward a few inches. Then you start thinking about how your knees are aching from being bent for so long, then you can't stop thinking about it and it gets worse. Hence, why you should take a walk every now and then.

When you get to the hotel, first thing you HAVE to do is take a very hot shower and change your clothes. It's the most wonderful feeling ever! It literally washes away your weariness.
