I still have a paper licence. My kids are adamant I need to get a photocard licence, but having looked at the dvla site I can't see that it states this anywhere.
Am I missing something?

If you get it renewed or changed in any way, then you need to upgrade to a photo license.
Otherwise, no, I don't think you need to change it.
Nope, no need to change it unless you move or any other changes.
Your kids just want you to get a silly photo they can laugh at!
Funny thing is, even with a photo licence, you still need the paper part sometimes.
Cheers all.
Just informed 'Little Miss I Know Everything Because I'm Nearly 18'. She still maintains she is correct!
Shes defo wrong - my dad has just had to sort his out, and there was zero hassle from the DVLA about it being an older paper one. No forced renewal or anything :)
What's annoying is that the new photo ones expire - because of the photo requirement.
My mum has one of the old paper licences, and you def don't need to do anything about it. If you were updating your details then I think that might be a different matter.
But no, nothing wrong its still current/valid/legal. :)
I still have a paper one Mrs D :)
Old skool rulez!! ;)
I got ID'd at the ripe old age of 29 a few times last year (which is weird because I never go ID'd when I was younger) :) The ridiculousness of the situation aside, I found it particularly funny when the girl (who can't have been more than 20) behind the till in Tescos tried to claim that my paper license was not a driving license.
I proceeded to explain to her that to have one of those licenses, you generally have to be ~29+ (as they were just phasing them in when I got mine). I'll stick with my paper license until I find some pressing need to update it to a photo one.
Me too. Old fashioned licence says less about me than the new one ever could.
Still needing the paper part, even with a photocard, is a complete crock. I'd like to shoot whoever came up with that imbecillic plan.
Well the photo part on it's own is not your driving licence, it's only the 2 parts together, so if you are required to produce your drivers licence it's both.
You can usually get away with just the photo part as police can get details on points etc from their database and it contains most of the info on the paper part
I had a paper license until I was 26- one of the last people to do so as, like wombar, they phased them out soon after I got mine. I had to get a photo licence when I applied for a provisional Category D entitlement so I could learn to drive buses.
Unlike wombar, I haven't been ID'd since I was 16:p. Though that's not much of a boast, because I think it's the baldness that gives my age away:rolleyes:.
If you move house, or make any changes at all to your license, then you'll have to get a photo one then, with all the annoyance that entails. Otherwise, you're good until your 70th birthday:p.
I'm pretty sure my mum's had the same paper license since 1984:).

note these phrases:
andQuote:
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) no longer issue paper driving licences. The European Union has a directive requiring all member states to issue driving licences in a card format containing the licence holder's photo and signature.
now note the total lack of "You must do it or small kittens will die" phrase.Quote:
Benefits of a photocard
There are numerous benefits that the photocard driving licence offers:
Now.. tell her Uncle Zakky say's that, in this case, her Mum knows best!
Tis as I thought. Unless I change name, move house or get points on my licence I'm OK for a good while with my paper licence.
She has read the above, conceded Mum is right and reeked her revenge by sticking a load of pictures of me on Facebook after a few drinkies on Saturday night :embarrassed:
Strictly speaking, I believe the address is 'an address where you can be contacted' which doesn't have to be your home address.
I'm finally getting around to changing my paper driving license because the listed address shortly won't be valid for receiving mail.. Then again, it is falling apart and got soaked from a spill on a kayaking weekend when I forgot to put it in a dry pouch, amongst other things.
