I still have a paper licence. My kids are adamant I need to get a photocard licence, but having looked at the dvla site I can't see that it states this anywhere.
Am I missing something?

If you get it renewed or changed in any way, then you need to upgrade to a photo license.
Otherwise, no, I don't think you need to change it.

Nope, no need to change it unless you move or any other changes.
Your kids just want you to get a silly photo they can laugh at!

Funny thing is, even with a photo licence, you still need the paper part sometimes.

Cheers all.
Just informed 'Little Miss I Know Everything Because I'm Nearly 18'. She still maintains she is correct!
Shes defo wrong - my dad has just had to sort his out, and there was zero hassle from the DVLA about it being an older paper one. No forced renewal or anything

I got ID'd at the ripe old age of 29 a few times last year (which is weird because I never go ID'd when I was younger) The ridiculousness of the situation aside, I found it particularly funny when the girl (who can't have been more than 20) behind the till in Tescos tried to claim that my paper license was not a driving license.
I proceeded to explain to her that to have one of those licenses, you generally have to be ~29+ (as they were just phasing them in when I got mine). I'll stick with my paper license until I find some pressing need to update it to a photo one.

Me too. Old fashioned licence says less about me than the new one ever could.

Eagles may soar, but weasels never get sucked into jet intakes.
Still needing the paper part, even with a photocard, is a complete crock. I'd like to shoot whoever came up with that imbecillic plan.
Well the photo part on it's own is not your driving licence, it's only the 2 parts together, so if you are required to produce your drivers licence it's both.
You can usually get away with just the photo part as police can get details on points etc from their database and it contains most of the info on the paper part
