    Question on anti-semitism

Hi guys basically im doing my dissertation at the minute which is about "The Jew in Elizabethan Drama"

The three plays I am doing are The merchant of Venice, The Jew of Malta and The Tragedy of Mariam.

Now I have a question that may seem silly but I need some clarification. Two of the plays I am looking at (the first 2 I mentioned) have quite a bit of anti-semitism in them but the third is a play where everyone is a Jew. So )hat I want to know is can there be anti-Semitism involved when all the characters are Jews? As i thought it had to be a non-Jew and a Jew?

    Many thanks for your responses

    Re: Question on anti-semitism

Consider how the Jewish characters are portrayed against society in general rather than just against other characters in the play.

I've never read the Tragedy of Mariam but consider the roles that the characters take and how they are treated by the writer.

It's entirely possible to either be discriminatory as the same group as yourself, or even to have internalised anti-<whatever> that affects yourself.

So, no, it doesn't have to be Jew against non Jew.

    Re: Question on anti-semitism

My last chapter will be looking at how the writer shows anti semitism in the plays. But in this chapter I am focusing on the characters and how they show anti-semitism towards other characers by how they treat the Jews in the play etc etc.

    Re: Question on anti-semitism

South Park did an episode called Jewbille, which features Garth the elder of "Anti-Semitic Jews". In that all the characters featured at Jew camp are Jewish and it I think it could be seen as anti-semitic. One of the writers is Jewish and the other is christian so is it ok to poke fun at religion. Issac Hayes who played "Chef" and is a Scientology* clearly believes not.

    Re: Question on anti-semitism

Well it can also be about the authors portrayal, and the audience is was aimed at? Since the Tragedy of Mariam is famous for being the first play published by a women I think you will need to engage with feminist literature and interpretations too, to consider the links between marriage, race and gender. Have you read "Othello and the Tragedy of Mariam" it might help in a comparative sense, if not directly relating to your question. It can also be analysed historically I guess...?

Tough one with The Merchant of Venice I feel personally. Shylocks' monologue during his trial is one of the most memorable of the entire play for me. I can consider the play a calling desire for tolerence rather than division.

From what I remember, Shylock is consistently portrayed as a horrible, money grabbing, dishonest person. These are often the attributes assigned to jews by anti-semites. I read the play around 5 or 6 years ago so my memory might be a bit hazy.

But it's as much the actors and audience and era that affects the timbre of the play, as the version of it you may read academically.
