Bit sad that no one seems to have pick this up but never mind.

Basicly any one who was in computers in the 80's and ealry 90's should know of this guy.
Way too soon imho

Very sad to hear this. I've known Guy for years, though I wouldn't claim to be a friend. Acquaintance/occasional colleague would be nearer. We first met in Las Vegas (Comdex) years ago when he had his passport (and other stuff) nicked. I've bumped into him many times since, including regularly at PCMag/ZD offices, and countless PR events.
I knew he was ill, and that this was coming, but it's still very sad to hear it. Apart from anything else, he was a very sharp, highly knowledgeable and extremely well-regarded industry analyst, and for that alone, he'll be sorely missed. My deepest sympathies go to his family and friends.
RIP, Guy.
Thats the thing Saracen, the current crop that are floating around are imho not a patch on him and it's sad to see one of the stars go out in such a sad way
A lot of the old guard are still around, Apex, including in my small way, me. But it's one of the impacts of the internet age that while anyone can "publish" their opinions and work, the mere fact that it is so cheap and easy to do so means that one of the primary safeguards over content (that of having to have someone prepared to pay you for it) has gone.
When I have to sell an idea to an editor, and he's going to get an invoice as a result, he's going to be sure he's happy with the work he gets as a result, or he's not going to commission too much more in the future.
Having said that, even back in the days of solely paid print work and before the internet was born, there were still some muppets writing for magazines, and on more than a few occasions, I've read "reviews" items that I have or had for review, and have had trouble believing that it's about the same product.
Guy wasn't one of them. He had a very strong insight, and phenomenal contacts and access. He was always worth a read, which is more than I can say for some (but by no means all) content these days.
R.I.P
I always valued reading his content in PCW magazine, which I bought regularly for a time.
His final blog entry here (from less than 2 weeks ago) makes for a poignant read...
