Iceland is at it again!
First they lose all our money, now they close all our airports with a giant ashcloud!

Small piston aircraft should be unaffected, if you have urgent travel plans then look me up
-
Re: Iceland is at it again!
Terrorists!
First they steal our money, now they use their own volcanic dust clouds against us! El Gordo was right to use terrorist legislation against them.
Actually I was there a fortnight ago, saw the small volcanic eruption from the plane, looked quite cool :)
-
Re: Iceland is at it again!
There was me thinking they were giving us a small amount of their island in return for the money! I don't know if things are just better reported, however it really feels like the "Earth is angry" at the moment, seems to have been rather a large number of Earthquakes etc in the last few month.

The Mayans didn't predict the end of the world, they just predicted everyone going over to Google Calendar!

Re: Iceland is at it again!
Hjordis Gudmondsdottir, a spokesperson for Isavia, Iceland's air traffic authority, said: "The ash is going out to the ocean and to Europe so our airports aren't really affected. It's almost funny, except it isn't, obviously"
:D At least they have a sense of humour!

Re: Iceland is at it again!
Volcano? pfft - they're just burning the money they were going to repay! (Probaly more use than trying to spend it!)

Ok that's in my quote of the year nominee list.

Re: Iceland is at it again!
What happen to the world lately ?
numerous earthquake within first 3 months and now this ..
something's not right..the earth is getting old
-
Re: Iceland is at it again!
There are just more of us so things like this get noticed more and thus they impact on us and our daily lives more when they do...
The Mayans sacrificed children, didn't predict their own demise and so whilst they were skilled astronomers I would take any predictions with a pinch of salt. Mind you, I don't think they said it was the end, just their calendar reset to zero and there weren't any around to renew it.

Re: Iceland is at it again!
how long is air travel going to be grounded? I hope its not going to be an extended period of time! I have a wedding to get to in America next week.

Re: Iceland is at it again!
So they've stolen from us, invaded our airspace (with volcanic debris), and have potentially a large amount of natural resources....
Anyone see where this is going?
On a more serious note, my parents are supposed to be flying tomorrow and if they don't go then I'll have to make drastic changes to my weekend :surprised:

There is a big thread on PPRuNe about this, apparently the cloud is being sampled for density, composition, etc.
http://www.pprune.org/rumours-news/4...r-traffic.html
as to when will things be back to normal, nobody knows. The samples might come back OK, the winds couold shift, or airspace could be closed for days.
-
Re: Iceland is at it again!
that would be bad news, I can't really miss this wedding.

Actually I was supposed to be taking my parents car from the airport to hers, now I\'ll have to drive my POS car on my own fuel, which I can\'t really afford to do till I get paid next week. Ah well, could be worse, I\'ll still be getting some!
Bring on my VIVA and a real job!

Re: Iceland is at it again!
Does this mean we don\'t have to worry about global warming anymore?
Volcano eruptions are our answer to the climate change.

I was watching one of the Sky News feeds at work today and they where doing one of those Charlie Brooker favourite style lets shove a live camera everywhere because we've got no facts piece.
They had some VT of a group of girls up north who couldn't go away on their holiday because of this 'outrage'. All I could think was F*** english girls are ugly.

Try living in Paris for a while; you forget what fat girls look like. When I went back to Britain (Newark, Notts) in December I couldn't believe the puffy, purulent, white flab. It was like walking through a tripe factory.
I am going from Paris to Carcassonne by train today. With my frequent traveller card it costs €89 each way, first class. Due to the cancellation of flights I was offered €550 for my return ticket and the remains of my frequent traveller card (worth about €80) so €550 for €260 worth of train ticket.

Re: Iceland is at it again!
Assuming this continues through tomorrow, we're all set to fly the Cessna to Schipol airport for a fly-by; might never get the chance again! Hopefully the controllers will be feeling friendly...
-
Re: Iceland is at it again!
When I was there 3 weeks ago there where plenty of people flying small aircraft to see the volcano, now given the size of the ash cloud, they might have changed things a bit thou.
(but if you want a recommendation for restaurants in reykjavik drop me a pm ;)

For someone not flying anywhere I think this is hilarious and also cool at the same time, volcanic ash turning to glass in an engine, very awesome stuff

The Dutch have now shut down their airspace to ALL traffic. What a bunch of morons!

Re: Iceland is at it again!
Well, work decided today not to let any aircraft out of the hangars today, and any that were out yesterday aren't allowed to fly again until they've been washed.

Re: Iceland is at it again!
Hmmm... they sever any means of flying fresh produce into the UK and scatter volcanic ash (good fertiliser) across our countryside. I think this is all a conspiracy from the UK agricultural sector.... :P
-
Re: Iceland is at it again!
Living in London I'm amazed at how clear the skies have been the last few days. Probably just the prevailing weather conditions, but you have to imagine that the total lack of air traffic has to contribute something to the lack of haze on these warmer days.
Last time I noticed anything like that was when I was in L.A. just after 9/11. No planes = clear blue skies. I thought I read something a while back which said one contrail could spread across half the visible sky in under an hour....
Ban all planes!

Re: Iceland is at it again!
I'm going on a gliding course next week, good job it doesn't affect us :)
Spoke to a lady at the gliding club yesterday who worked in travel insurance. We were joking about how long it would take for most of the human race to die off after an apocalypse due to flapping around helplessly. Most of the people stuck abroad aren't actually doing much to help their situation apparently, they're all hoping that the insurance will cover it - sadly most insurance packages don't include volcano cover - when it's the airlines that should be refunding passengers.

Re: Iceland is at it again!
I am starting to get a little worried now to be honest!
-
Re: Iceland is at it again!
I have a couple of friends who are in various European countries at the moment who can't get home. I feel bad for them since they will be missing out on so much study time right before the exams, but they are in a nice hot country so I doubt it's that bad.
My parents are meant to go away in 2 weeks to Spain, I might have to cancel all those parties :P .

Re: Iceland is at it again!
I see good ol' Dan Snow son of Peter is off to Calais for a D-Day style pick up of stranded Brits. The intrepid explorer announced his intentions on the news this morning. He did admit that others had already reached Calais with the same plans.....they clearly hadn't been delayed with the hulabaloo of announcing their plans to an adoring public. That Dan, what will he think of next...a similar rescue in Australia or Bora-Bora.

And when i cleared my windscreen with the washers the water turned a grey colour.

I can\'t help with the US or India, but if anyone is stuck closer to home and desperate, I can try and help with a flight...it won\'t be cheap, but light aircraft are still able to fly.

Depends on what you call cheap I guess - looking to get my wife home from Cyprus via silly routes who all want silly money - £2000 or so... I think she's just going to have to stay put until it all starts flowing again and just take the free transfer from easyjet.
-
Re: Iceland is at it again!
Unfortunately I can't beat that cost :( Most cost-effective, for anyone who needs to get back soon, is train to Rotterdam and then a private flight across the Channel for 500 euro or so. (500 euro per flight, 3 seats available to split the cost...)
-
Re: Iceland is at it again!
Thanks - that's useful info. I've been looking at a range of options but most would take so long that I think it's probably better to wait the week out and see if the issue is resolved (either the cloud goes away or various flights are cleared regardless)... Unfortunately Cyprus does not appear to be the best place to get stuck - apparently there are no ferries on or off the island until May
