    Rant!

    WTF is with some people....

I've just had an old ex of a friend bring her laptop to me, bear in mind I never really spoke to her when she was going out with Dave as they always had there heads stuck together but anyways that’s another story..

She's dropped her laptop while it was turned on and the drives borked, no surprise there, I can get a replacement drive 20Gb for £65, her original drive was only a 6gb but who sells new small drives eh...
I said I'd fit the drive, backup whatever I could off the old drive, reinstall windows office and put back whatever files of hers I could get off the old drive and all the Windows updates n bits n bobs, AVG etc etc for £90 all in, n she don’t wanna pay it....

So thats £65 for a drive and £25 for my time, how long does it take to put a drive in a laptop, install windows, install office, install patches, install bits n bobs...

Anyone else think that counts as m8's rates?

    WTF?!

Depends really, i've set up more for less than that and less for far more, all depends who im doing it for tbh, i'm building wiffle_bmxer's new rig up for nowt cos he's a good mate and a few other people would get the same treatment as i consider em like family. in her case i'd have called it £100 though dude. Tell her to go get an estimate at pc world, she'll be back

Never charged a mate anything other than parts for building/fixing a pc... but she's what you'd call a friend of a friend, I'd suppose.

I've been given anything between pints, bottles of whiskey and £20 on top of parts, which is lovely - it shows that they appreciate what you've done for them. Especially when your best mate comes to your doorstep holding a bottle of JD after you retrieve their dissertation from a broken hdd. Makes being a genius worth the while, if I'm honest.

I would just have got HD, got her to pay for that, fit it, then just given it back with XP. She could have installed office
I would have done whole job if she was fit tho

    I usually go by the following;

    1. How good a friend they are?
    2. How long is it going to take?
    3. How difficult a job it is?

Small easy jobs I won't ask for anything for my time, then slide the scale up depending on the above. Admittedly most of my friends have worked out that if it's physical labour they just need to feed me afterwards and throw in a couple of cans to keep me happy. Though with the amount I can eat it may be cheaper for them to pay cash by the hour

    1. I've not seen her in about 2 years, she was the gf of a friend of mine but I never really spoke to her.

    2. It'll take about 5 minutes to fit the drive, then ontop of that the amount of time it takes to install windows, office and whatever else onto a p3-500/128Mb laptop...

    3. Its an easy job, thats not the point tho...

In a friend of a friend situation,it's normally the "friend" who benefits most from your toils but still, if she knows the part was £65 what sort of tight **** wouldn't offer you anything in return for your troubles.
How's my punctuation tonight by the way ?
