    About to go into surgery!

So there I was, going to work this morning thinking I had an upset stomach, 12 hours later I'm being transfered from A&E to have my appendix removed... bummwr!

Thing is, why am I so scared??

Re: About to go into surgery!

You will be fine , its going to be done under general anaesthetic, so you wont remember or feel a thing. Surgery is always going to be a little scary but its a very common procedure so there is nothing to worry about.

Do post back here when it all done and you are feeling better.

Re: About to go into surgery!

Your scared because someone is going to knock you out.
Then someone else is going to cut you open and remove a part of your body that doesnt want to be there anymore.
Then, all being well there going to stitch you back up again.
You'll come round, feeling a bit ****ty but on the plus side you'll have lost some weight and you wont have to go thru the painful death when your appendix explodes inside your body.

Ive been cut up by so many surgeons (and looked after by some cute nurses) that I've lost count, as much as I can say you have nothing to worry about you still will but trust me you will be fine.

Sitrep on the state cuteness of the nurses please

Appendectomies are quite common really, i've had a few mates that have had them done, it's a bit sore for a while, but it's better than it going kapow inside you

    You'll be fine.

And yes, the statii on the nurses would be a plus when you're back online

You're probably scared because you'll get it done in an MRSA infested underfunded NHS hospital

Because you are going to be anaesthatised, a machine will be breathing for you, you can probably say goodbye to your pubes due to the location.

Make friends with the student nurses, they have a LOT more time than the registered staff.

Is it possible to have a nightmare that you can't wake up to escape from when under anaesthetic?

Not to scare the OP, but there have been cases under general anaesthetic where the patient has been physically knocked out but their mind remains awake so they can feel the pain but cannot move or make a sound to indicate it. . Hence why if situations permit doctors prefer local anaesthetic as the patient is somewhat awake, and the patient does not feel so bad afterwards.

Anyhow removing a appendix is normally done via laparoscopy nowadays, 3 small incisions and it tends to be over in half an hour. It still needs general anaesthetic but if all goes well you are out in 24 hours

Re: About to go into surgery!

Why are you scared? Because it hurts like a b'tard.

I had to pass out to get seen by anyone, which was nice, 12 hours later it was out.

You're sliced open, cauterised, then steri-stripped up. Doesn't take too long but someone has to shave around your third leg and the top of your left leg - I didn't ask who, I just pretended it was the cute female nurse and not the other hairy dude nurse.

Coughing hurts more than coughing should, laughing is off limits and don't try and pick up your laptop, it doesn't look heavy, but it is and a little bit of insides will pop out the end of your freshly sliced stomach and you'll have to nip back to A&E to have it poked back in and re-stuck.

Good luck and enjoy the rest - morphine helps a lot.

An appendectomy is a piece of cake. I did one at university.

Of course I did mine on a dead lady, but it was still easy.

Good luck, but you won't need it.

I thought a piece of cake was a confection made from flour, egges and (usually) fat... Is that mistake the reason you fled to France?

Re: About to go into surgery!

Easy rule of thumb is the commoner the op, the less worried you should be. They do appendicectomies all the time, so they'll find it very straightforward in 90% of cases.

Also, you only have one, so there's no chance of them cutting out the wrong one!
