    Been a long night...

As night shifts go, I could think of worse things to be doing.

The LHC has just set a new luminosity record, and we're taking physics data at about 10 times the rate we've ever previously managed But I'm on the verge of passing out from lack of sleep and my eyes are seriously tired from looking at all these goddamn monitors:

Pretty awesome screen setup for the Trigger Desk in the CMS control room. I get twelve 24" monitors and two 42" plasma screens. And cleverly the same mouse and keyboard works seamlessly on all screens despite there being 4 PCs running behind the scenes. (Synergy+ is the special sauce, apparently. Pretty neat bit of software)

Here are some nice event displays for you:

    I'm off to bed.

Yup. Well sort of. Technically I work for Bristol University in the high-energy physics group, and the CMS detector is the experiment I work on. I helped to design/build various aspects of the trigger, and everyone who works for the experiment now has to do shifts to actually run the thing. So, I'm in Geneva right now doing trigger shifts at that desk in the control room in the pic above. Unfortunately, I pulled the short straw with three night shifts in a row (fri, sat, sun), so along with last night, and the next two nights, I get to be in the driving seat of 1 billion quids worth of particle physics detector

Tonight was pretty awesome, despite ruining my Friday night in a social sense. It's the first time I've been on shift when we've had beam. I got to watch as they injected the LHC with protons, ramped up the energy and then start colliding them. Tonight was a record-breaking run for the LHC, so it was pretty exciting to be in the control room.

Right, I really am off to bed now.

Hey, as far as I'm concerned there is no short straw there - i'm sure I speak for many hexites when I say that you have one very, very cool job!

By the way, do you think anyone would notice if you, erm, accidentally got the LHC to do some 'folding' for a few nights?

    Re: Been a long night...

Well I wouldn't mind sitting in there for a night - except my understanding of particle physics ends with Bohr model

Does it need a lot of imagination to translate those pictures and data into what is actually happening - or is it 'just' data to you?

(I probably haven't phrased that very well - I mean the images are a representation of the information presented by the detectors - but at the physical level it seems quite awesome - or is it now so familiar that it seems routine?)

There's a fairly easy to read explanation of one of the experiments they've already done at the LHC which talks about creating the Beauty particle:

Well, since I don't understand particle physics, this is really what caught my eyes. I always wondered if I could use the same mouse for my desktop *and* laptop (without plugging/unplugging) and this might be the solution

thats a lot of effort just to multibox in WoW Fraz....

and does trigger shifts involve putting in a sequence of numbers every 118 minutes?

you could be getting me seriously worried if so...

Yes, the pics are just a "simple" representation of what's happening in the detector. You can see the reconstructed charged tracks (curvy yellow lines) and calorimeter energies (the big green bars that shoot everywhere in the first couple of pics). Mainly I think we have the event displays to give us a warm fuzzy feeling inside, although obviously you can spot some simple problems with them. They have big screens all over the control room for just the event displays. It keeps us happy I expect it will become routine, but it's definitely not yet!

Yes, that's good stuff, especially this early on. In pure science terms creating b-mesons (the Beauty particle in press parlance) is nothing new or really that exciting anymore - we've been doing it for decades. However, it's a good demonstration of how well the experiments are performing, and it's a good way of road-testing the mechanisms required to do analysis of events. We'll be making god knows how many millions of the things over the course of the next few years.
