Anyone here have relatives or experience living in a static caravan?

My family is seriously looking into this as a retirement option for our Mum, but havent found any good resources online for what to expect. We're looking at Portugal, and Mum has already lived abroad in countries with poorer conditions (eg Venezuela) so i think she'll handle Portugal just fine.

    Your input/ideas/stories are appreciated

Only holidayed in statics... but for something like 15 years...

Biggest issue I can think of is that the telly tends to be black and white and you can't nail anything into the walls.

Nothing to do with caravans, but can I ask about income ? FX effects on this can be quite large. The other issue would be health care. What has she got set up ? The NHS is a wonderful thing.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

    (mistake thanks lol)

As for the NHS it is wonderful when it works!! As for healthcare in an EU country are you not covered to some extent ?

I have not stayed in a static caravan but comfort may be an issue. Have you looked at a small apartment?

Both my parents live in Park Homes (separately they divorced a good few years ago) in the UK, they normally are quite nice communities with everyone looking out for each other, what they would be like abroad tho is anyone's guess

Lived in a wooden mobile home (think holiday chalet style) for a few years, they're mostly ok, a bit of a pain to heat at times but nothing so bad I wouldn't do it again.

Re: Anyone here have relatives or experience living in a static caravan?

Well this is only from my experience of living in a couple in this country..

The quality of the home can make a big difference, especially with the insulation. This can make a big difference between the home being swelteringly hot on hot days, and like a fridge during cold days (which then makes heating very expensive), to the home being more "normal" in terms of hot and cold days.

The communities at these sites are normally quite good, it is usually the owners that you need to look out for, the ground rent and utilities. Check things like water, gas and electric. Water and gas you are generally tied to whatever the site supplies, and their rates. However the gas can vary, as some insist that you buy the gas through them, even if it is bottled.

Again depending on the home, they can be quite small and have a number of fixed pieces, so make sure to check the room you have, and the size of things, especially any fixed beds. Generally you are very limited with what can be changed, so make sure they like it how it is if it is a long term thing.

You also have to remember that they are not like houses, where they keep their value, they depreciate with age, just like a car. Not sure about abroad, but in this country there are very few places that will deal with any kind of insurance for them, especially once they reach a certain age.

Lastly, the homes are quiet often sold by the occupier, with the site owner taking a cut. If there is anything that is in anyway removable, make sure to get it in writing that it will come with the home, as I know someone who were told that the heaters would stay, but they took them.

I was "trailer trash" in one of these in Florida for a month or so. It was pretty plush. As with anything in life, you get what you pay for, and you're not giving us much information to go on...

We've got about €25k, and she receives a pension which would be accessible over there, so from our preliminary research it looks like that would be enough for something basic/budget. I'm thinking it might be smart to rent at a caravan park for a while to see if she likes it before buying.

We would like to just get her an apartment etc but just dont have the money for anything decent, and she'd like a bit of garden space as shes quite into her gardening.
