So, I was heading into town today and just outside my village there is a very mild right-hand corner by the local Post Office.
I was driving by it today, when out of the corner of my eye I see a Ford Focus on its roof in the park to my right, back wheels still spinning. It took me a second or two to register what I'd seen and then I stopped and legged it back to where the car was to try and help (after sticking my Hazards on, of course).
As I arrived at the car, the Woman driving (the only occupant) had extracted herself from the car and was making her way out of the park up onto the grass at the side of the road. I got to her and asked her if she wanted an Ambulance (do you ask, or do you call straight away? I didn't know!) - she said no, and seemed pretty lucid and of pretty sound mind so I went with what she said. About a minute later two other folks stopped to help and the chap who stopped 2nd of the two kinda' took control of the whole thing - he was talking to her and trying to calm her down and so on.
I went back down to the car to retrieve the woman's handbag 'cause she'd asked for it (after letting her use my phone to call her Husband - they lived in the next village along, figured she'd be fine to call him if my phone wasn't needed to call an Ambulance!). The car was pretty beat up, looked like it had landed on the drivers side as the door glass was smashed (although I think she may have done a bit of that herself to get out) - and the actual space where the window would be was a lot smaller, looks like the pillar that runs up the windscreen had given way a bit.
Anyways, an off-duty police officer showed up too, she suggested we call the non-emergency number to report the accident and the Husband of the lass who had crashed showed up not long afterwards too, I think they took her to the local doctor surgery (literally 30 seconds up the road).
Now by this time there were 5/6 cars stopped across both sides of the road - what was a nice mobile chicane to slow traffic was becoming a bit of a Hazard, so me and the police woman left (I figured I should leave, I wasn't sure what I was doing anyway!) - the car was still there when I came home this evening, but with a 'Police Aware' sticker on it, so it had been reported I expect.
But yeah, they don't teach you how to deal with that in the Highway Code! I didn't really know what I was going to do when I got to the car (I was delighted she'd got herself out by the time I got there!), but I figured I had to stop, so I did, and luckily it all worked out - I'm not sure if she broke her nose or just gave it a dunt on the wheel/got 'airbagged' - but the had no other Physical Injuries that I could see - I reckon she'll be a bit sore tomorrow though!
Just thought I'd share - I'm mildly chuffed that I helped out with something like that, a good deposit into the Karma Bank Account!
