    Googlemail to become Gmail

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/10096107.stm

    As per the title really.

One thing i don't get is this...

British users with Googlemail addresses will be asked whether they wish to change their address. It will not affect the settings or functionality of the accounts, Google said.
I thought that anything with @gmail.com still went to a @googlemail.com address.

When i would assume that if you were to change it to @gmail.com any addressed to @googlemail.com would still reach yours if that makes any sense.

However it does affect when you send messages the domain they appear to come from.

Well I can sign in using @gmail.com or @googlemail.com so I don't really see the point in this tbh.

    Re: Googlemail to become Gmail

I had Gmail from before the original change... and have only ever used gmail as my address not googlemail and visit gmail.com to check it! I pretty much completely ignored the message about the trademark dispute, the only difference is the logo in the top left said Googlemail.

So I'm 100% certain that both will work fine

    Re: Googlemail to become Gmail

Mine's always been gmail.com but my missus has her's as a googlemail account.

As a test months ago I logged into gmail using a proxy, made it look like I was in the US and then tried to create a new account with the same name as my missus, but with a gmail.com domain instead. As soon as it said this was already taken I knew why and I've been using gmail.com for her address for months with no issues

I'm glad it's going now as I've seen 'googlemail' spelt some really interesting ways recently on people's email queries.

    Re: Googlemail to become Gmail

"Since 'gmail' is 50% fewer characters than 'googlemail' we estimate this name change will save approximately 60 million keystrokes a day," wrote software engineer Greg Bullock on Google's Gmail blog.
Yeah, 'cause all those extra keystrokes are really the main issue here...

It really doesn't make a difference as you've found out. I think the best analogy would be: there are two WD Passports. Both are black. One is packaged in a box that shows a black HD, the other one is packaged in one that shows red, but with a sticker saying that it's black inside.

Also using the same analogy: there are two WD Passports. Both are black. Both are packaged in a box that shows a black HD, one box has an Apple sticker on it.

One is alot more popular for no particular reason...
