People seem to say
"i won't vote Conservative because ..."
"i won't vote lib dem because...."
"i won't vote Gordon Brown because.."
which makes me wonder, if he wasn't leading the party, would they stand a better chance?

In the short-term, I think yes - they'd be more likely to win the election, but not in the long-term.
If they lose, then he can go and be replaced and nobody would really be too surprised - had they ousted him in the last couple of months, or if they ousted him now, I think that would be incredibly divisive for the party and make it difficult for them to work effectively for quite a while.

Well, I think the Conservatives are certainly no better and actually a lot worse. Sadly, most people don't actually thing it's worth ever voting Lib Dem because they just automatically assume it's going to be a wasted vote. I'd much rather see the Lib Dems with a majority than either Labour or Conservative.
How anyone can think of voting for a party that believes that paying married people £150 a year is going to solve society's major problems is beyond me. It's just insulting. Not to mention that CallMeDave is totally unbearable. I'd rather have Gordon Brown than CallMeDave.
Sorry to hjack this thread but i thought it would be better then starting a new one,Could someone tell me if you have to pay for those's posters you see people putting up windows or gardens to support the local candidate?

Better than voting for a party, and more particularly a leader, that's showed the arrogance and rank ineptitude that's taken the economy to the point of disaster that Gordon ("abolished boom and bust") Brown has.
Would Labour stand a better chance without Brown? Yes. Would they win? Still doubtful, I think, because regardless of policy, having been in power for 13 years, you are going to get the blame for what goes wrong, and it's inevitable that whoever is in power, things will.
The biggest single problem right now is that, in my opinion, the vast majority of the populace don't actually trust any of the parties. The spin Labour have raised to an art form started the disenchantment in a serious way (though that's a Tory invention originally), though it took a few years to see the hype for what it was, for it to percolate through, sink in and take root. More recently, the expenses scandal has tarred all MPs, whether guilty or not, with the same brush and left a deep psychological cynicism in the electorate. And given that underlying tone, the clear belief of the vast majority of people (in my opinion) that ALL of the parties are lying to us by omission over the depth of the pain to come leaves us with the choice of the picking the least bad of a very poor bunch.
There's not a single party whose leadership (and I don't just mean the three leaders in the main parties, but the teams, and more than the three parties) I actually trust, and for me, this election is merely an exercise in damage limitation .... and a minimally effective one at that.
So yes, in my view, Labour would stand a better chance without Brown .... and it's clearly a view echoed by some Labour candidates too. It's also a view echoed by some senior Labour politicians. But it's far from their only problem. They also suffer from the negative effect of being the incumbent in hard times, and from a general disdain for all politicians.
They do bring a lot of that on themselves thou, I remember asking the same question and getting two completely different answers from a lid dem candidate in Reading.
An awful lot of their polocies are just retarded. That's par for the course, but the VAT on houses one is just stupid. We've a shortage of good quality homes, that is why the price of them is so un-affordable for most. How do we solve that? Putting VAT on them and making it sound like a good thing for those who aren't on the ladder is so stupid. We need to be making planning laws more efficient instead.

Some people should not be allowed to vote. I know someone who works in the council, they have had calls from people who say they cannot find 'Gordon Brown' or 'Nick Clegg' on their voting forms. Sheesh.
