    un-organised workplace?

to cut a long story short. I was within a few yards of a company I am schedule to have a meeting and the guys had to cancel it as they was busy in a high priority meeting. I literal got the text plus miss call 15min before the interview but I sill went inside so they can tell me advance .

bad first impression by them. my ex co worker been working there for a month their and said its been really busy their .

i know usualy i the candidate is suppose to show good punchuality and try and "sell" myself to them but it works both ways. company's HAVE to also show their interestsotherwise who's to say that this place is as worse as where i am now?

i have recheduled it for tomorrow morning and because of it, have to take the day off sick as its a bit too late to phone work for a holiday.

An interview is a two way thing.

Make sure you have all the ammo ready, so you can interview them over your new job. Always works for me!

Count yourself lucky, I was actually in an interview which was canceled 1/2 way through on September 11th 2001. Now THAT was bad timing. Got the job in the end though!

    Re: un-organised workplace?

Sometimes stuff just blows up with no notice - usually metaphorically, sometimes literally

Ask them what happened, see if you can discuss the skills that you have that could have helped out. If you're smart you could use this to really match up what you can bring to their real business needs.

    Re: un-organised workplace?

i remember walking down the road on my way to an interview & seeing a fire engine belting past me, full sirens blazing, the whole works

i arrived at my potential employers only to find all 800+ staff in the carpark, having just been evacuated, so i stood around at a respectful distance feeling a bit of a berk just stood on a street corner fully suited & booted

interview was about 45 mins late & took a grand total of about 5 mins, basically consisting of "what's your name, are you a good team player, when can you start, kthanksbye"

i started a week later..been there (in various roles) 13 years & counting
if it ain't broke...fix it till it is

    Re: un-organised workplace?

    cool nice one!

Quick question. if you feel your underpaid drastically in your current workplace and looking for a much better pay, do you lie to your interviewer stating how you are on a very close amount to what you are demanding for the position or do you be honest and say your earning far less than what you are asking for your next role?

The reason i ask is because some say that if your honest and say ur underpaid and give reasons why you never got the payrise etc etc, the interviewer may think all your doing is showing them than if you dont get a payrise etc, you will quickly dismiss that place and show lack of support for that said company.

i imagine that if you do indeed lie, sometimes the company asks for your p60 if you land the job and the p60 says what you really earn lol

edit: why choose a salary closer to what you want for your next job? because i heard many times that your salary should only increase 10% each year from a payrise or from a new job

    Re: un-organised workplace?

Your previous salary shouldn't really come into it - it's none of their business - you're negotiating what they're willing to pay you now for the role you'd be taking on

As for reasons for moving on - moving past glass ceilings, gaining new experiences, career growth etc are all good options.

Good companies should be interested in investing in their employees, moving on for better prospects are very valid reasons for moving on. Remember, the interview is a two-way street, you're interviewing them just as much as they're interviewing you, so don't be afraid to ask them questions you want answers for

Cool thanks. i thought so. No harm in aiming high first to see what they say i guess. the number im thinking is still lower than what my mate got when we worked together but true say he does have more experience then me and is a good developer so im not really asking for the same wage has him.

Good luck for today (but I shouldn't mention that you had to throw a sicky to attend the interview - the potential employer, might not be impressed by that show of 'initiative'!)

J, I'm a bit concerned that you'd both consider faking being ill and lying to your potential new employer. It's unlikely to get out, but if it did you would be stuffed and it's not the kind of quality that most employers look for. Never lie about your salary in this situation - if you don't want to reveal it then don't reveal it, but don't lie about it.

The reason i ask is because some say that if your honest and say ur underpaid and give reasons why you never got the payrise etc etc, the interviewer may think all your doing is showing them than if you dont get a payrise etc, you will quickly dismiss that place and show lack of support for that said company.
I've not heard that - to be honest companies will not be expecting loyalty for a brand new employee, and also many would actually prefer someone who is looking to impress enough to get pay rises/bonuses. There are many motivations, but money is one that they will understand the best. Not to say you should give the impression of being a money grabber of course, but showing that you are eager to impress is good.
edit: why choose a salary closer to what you want for your next job? because i heard many times that your salary should only increase 10% each year from a payrise or from a new job
If by choose you mean lie, then I don't agree. I'd love to have been in the situation of 'only' getting 10% pay rise each year - in the public sector we were capped to 2%. On the other hand there is no limit to pay increase if you change job - unless you are doing exactly the same job as before then they really can't be compared easily.

Same, and I was happy to give my old salary when applying for my current job. I still got what I asked for when they gave me the job. When it comes to salary negotiations don't forget to take into account any benefits of the old job - for me I was giving up a nice pension scheme and have to commute further for the new job for example. That is the only case where I think you can give a different salary figure to that on the pay slip, if you reasonably estimate the value of previous benefits, though I was happier saying £x plus benefits inc. y.

I diddnt pull a sicky. I asked for am emergency leave.

Anyways finished my interview I think.I blew it. too nervous and showed them something that had a few bugs and issues and got grilled on it.

I pretty much tried to defend and blag my way out of trouble for half of the interview and there were things I all of a sudden diddnt know! its as if my mind was half blank.

ahh well back to the drawing bored
