After a holiday in NY I not only brought back a plastic statue of liberty and aN I love NY tshirt but also a really bad cold with all the symptoms of flu eg tired, head ache, cough etc. Am I still supposed to check with my GP or not?

Phone them and see first; they don't like you coming in with swine flu.
Try NHS Direct, they should be able to advise yiou.
Society's to blame,
Or possibly Atari.
With anything like that there is a problem of something called "Manliness". Sod that and call your Doctors.
You don't wanna be all poorly and those close to you don't wanna catch whatever it is. Whether it's a cold/flu/swine.
Plus, if you had Swine Flu, or even regular Flu, you wouldn't be asking questions on this forum , you'd be in such fever/pain you'd be in bed shaking like a goodun, probably thinking your feet are going to freeze off, and wishing the Sleep Fairies would just come and take you away.
There are quite a few "heavy colds" doing the rounds at the moment - if it's flu then you'll be bedridden for a couple of days.
It's more than likely just a very bad cold, you'll probably feel better in a day or two.
It has much less to do with manliness and much more to do with wasting medical resources with every sniffle and scratch you ever get. His question was valid.
You're going to be sick whether you see the doctor or not, your loved ones may contract the contagion whether you see the doctor or not, the treatment is the same; bed rest, lemsips, and chicken soup.
Not necessarily, not every flu infection results in helplessness/fever/pain.
