Why are Solid State Drives so expensive these days?
Why are Solid State Drives so expensive these days?
mad random speed performance and that's wat makes the difference!
Maybe because they're a newish technology (at least in the high capacity market), and not yet mainstream. There'll only be a small percentage of the world market using them exclusively at the moment. Give it a year or two and see what happens. The first CD writers cost thousands!

Apart from the fact that many people are willing to pay current price, I think that supply of flash memory has decreased as well. It's not just the price of SSD that's pricey. Pen drive havent gotten cheaper in over a year (actually, it's up).
If it's good enough then you shouldn't be bothered by their cost
'Good enough' is subjective. It's fact that a good SSD stomp a good mechanical drive in performance. Whether it's good value as also subjective, I happen to think it's too much, but most people who paid the asking price have not regretted it.
Isnt it because Apple buy up all the NAND chips they can get their hands on for iPhones etc?
In general NAND is in very high demand for lots of different purposes. I think I read NAND makes up 90% of the cost of an SSD, with the rest development and the controller.
There is a difference between capacity and speed.
A decent SSD with a decent controller will decrease boot times and program opening times etc, obviously due to the price you would still want a run of the mill drive as a data drive.
For example, i have:
80GB Intel G2 as my OS drive
640GB WD AAKs as a data drive
500GB WD AAKs as a data drive
2 * 250GB WD AAKs in RAID0 as additional program installs/unexplored territory
Lots of room for files, but also program loading benefits![]()
Yea, you guys have good points there, ahh, i just cant wait to get me one of them drives.
^ I still think it's more supply & demand (exchange rate is valid too). Price of SSD in the US, discounting VAT/exchange rate/UK premium is still very high relative to mechanical drive there. And like the UK, it hasn't dropped much in the past 12 months.
I can see where you are all coming from. The only thing i can really think of is that the technology that is used to make theses drives must be quite expensive to use. For example, when computers were being built for the first time, it was new technology that was available for them to be built. Technology has improved over the years, no doubt, and here we are in the same position, we all see something nice and classy and we all want it, me included. The marketing has to also play a bog part in the sales.
Expensive on price vs storage.
Cheap on a price vs performance.
Considering the money I've spent on gfx cards being fractionally better than the last,
or a CPU being 30% better than the last
upgrading to an SSD made more of a night and day difference than those ever did TBH.
When I first bought an SSD I was more than happy to get change from a grand. The fact it enabled me to use the peristant memory in a way even a ten grand SAN would not permit made it a bargain!
