    did North Korea do it?

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20100520/...y-3fd0ae9.html

according to this article, the main piece of evidence is a fragment from the propeller of the torpedo, that apparently has a serial number that matches another north Korean torpedo. well for me it begs the question, why so stupid?

why would they fire a torpedo that had a serial number on it!? to me, it suggests that it may be one of the following scenarios.

    1. a rouge north korean sub, acting without orders.

    2. an attempt at starting a new proxy war. possibly by China or maybe US or another 3rd party.

    3. the south Koreans themselves, looking for further sanctions against their neighbours.

    4. a terrorist act.

or the 5th choice that the world seems to have decided, that the North ordered this attack, and did not make any attempt to cover it's tracks. Considering the only ally they have is China (and this relationship is hardly stable), why would they start a war they have little chance of winning? or is this China starting to pull the strings?

Re: did North Korea do it?

Thing is, North Korea leadership has shown many times in the past that they don't really care, and has made a habit of backing down one or two steps but then taking three. If I had to pick, I would just take it at the face value. Might be wrong, but the odds (based on history) are on my side (IMHO).

This. Knowing that it probably wouldn't start a war.

Re: did North Korea do it?

At a news conference chief investigator Yoon Duk-Young showed a propeller fragment bearing a serial number that matched the markings on a North Korean torpedo that South Korea obtained years earlier.
Riiiight, so your evidence points at a torpedo that you "aquired" years earlier, so you could of infact shot at your own ship using another "North Korean" torpedo that you also aquired earlier..

Killing 50+ of your own soldiers and making it look like your sea defences can be penetrated at ease? I don't think they're that stupid

Actually, either you misunderstand the stealthy nature of submarines or have confused Korea with Cambodia.

Submarines are usually painted grey so they don't show up well against the sea, a rouge one would stand out like a large pink willy, and the Khmer Rouge operated in Cambodia.

Re: did North Korea do it?

    I think two things.

    1) We'll never know for sure, not least because the conspiracy theorists will be blaming someone else and they might be right, though I rather doubt it.

    2) Most likely, yes North Korea did it. Why? Because they're isolated, detached, in deep economic trouble, and are playing a game with few cards and they don't think like most of everyone else does.

North Korea probably did it, but apart from make a lot of noise there's nothing Korea or USA can do short of a war and no one wants that.

Re: did North Korea do it?

i cant believe nobody has put forward the idea that it may have been a Japanese solider who didn't know WWII had ended and had been hiding somewhere with his suicide sub, mistook the ship for American (which tbf it probably is, or at least based on designs from) and brought honor to himself at long last

its pretty obvious when you think about it
