Jump on a bus or the tube and head to a museum, some should be open late. Wildfowl and wetlands trust is worth a visit, its the other sideo f the river and should be walkable. Strole along the river, head to covent garden, normally lively in the evening.
If you've never been, the Natural History Museum and Science Museum are both a must visit.
I think they're both free to enter from 5pm till they close at 6pm, not enough time to get round it all but if you're utterly skint then it's worth it.
Edit: Oh, entry is free now.. been a while since I've been.
Exhibition road is just round the corner from you, the museums are all free, but some special exhibitions charge.
Then a take a stroll down to hide park, green park, then down to the Thames via Buckinham and then Westminister palace. Nice stroll down the south bank heading out east, stopping perhaps at the tate modern if you like ur silly art.
Once you get to More London (the area by city hall, near Tower Bridge) cross over the river and have a look at the tower itself. Then hop on the DLR to Greenwich observatory.
Should fill a couple of days, if the weather is nice this weekend then win.

London Eye? Great views from it.
London Eye's not cheap and there's always big crowds, I'd go with the museums and the parks, there's loads of both and they're mostly free.
The British Museum and the Imperial War Museum are both good bets, and if you're down with that kind of thing, the National Gallery.
London Eye gives crap views, is full of Italian tourists and costs a fortune, for what? barely 10 min of the 'flight' is any good.
Last time I went up in the eye, it cost about £40 for us both.
Last time I visited a bar at the top of the old natwest tower, it cost me some £45 for a bottle of NV champers, and we sat there for well over an hour, higher up, with better views, and no fricken Italian tourists.
The London Eye is one of the WORST things you can do, there are much better alternatives that give better views, cost less and have much more salubrious surroundings.

Greenwich park is quite nice if you fancy the trek and from the top you can see most of london. Have a picnic if you will !
Then, unless someone else is buying your day travelcards, walk to things rather than use the tube / bus / DLR etc. London is nowhere near as big as most people would like you to think (I visit monthly for a contract meeting @ Elephant & Castle - I walk back to Euston and it takes ~ 40 minutes). I've also walked up to Euston from Tower Bridge which (iirc) took noticably less than an hour...
Still worth the experience of going on the London eye.

Which.
I just don't believe you.
This isn't one of those matter of taste things, the London Eye isn't that high up, its expensive, you get very little time actually at the top (30 min total for a rotation.....) your crammed in like a sardine.
Or you can luxuriate for the same price, with a nice beverage or meal, take a lot longer to take in the surroundings, heck half of them even have telescopes/binoculars for hire.
You get better views from:
The BT Tower
The Natwest Tower
Centre Point
The Gherkin
Half of Canary Wharf
I'm sorry but I call bull****, there is no way the London Eye is anything like any of the places listed above (yes so the Gherkin + BT Tower are invite only, but plenty aren't!)

I have to echo what TheAnimus said the eye is poo, there are better places to go, National Gallery or the National Portrait Gallery are recommended heck even just wandering around Trafalgar Square people watching is fun
