Help with aluminium wheelchair hubs

Morning all,

I keep geting black hands off my aluminium wheelchair hub/rims (the bit I grab onto to push myself along). I suspect it's a mix of ali oxide and dust/crap etc. I clean them most days with wet wipes, but it just keeps coming back.

I do wear gloves sometimes to keep my hands clean, but in weather like we've had recently, it all gets a bit sweaty.

So - Im considering painting the rims with something like Hammerite - would that be suitable, or not. Any other suggestions ? (no more gloves though, please )

Powered coating them would be best, as it would not come off easily, you might find the paint gets on your hands too. However I am not sure that or painting would fix the dirt problem, Aluminium Oxide is white and your getting black hands so I think the dirt would get on the paint and then to your hands. Only paint it if you think it will make the surface easier to clean.

I'm no expert but I'm sure you can buy hand rim protectors.

I'll ask 'the boss' tomorrow.

if he doesn't know, no-one will. infact, i should already know .. I do use car spray paint + laquer for the other bits though - bodywork/side panels and things.

How about that plasti-kote paint, or better still, get them plastic coated?

option 1: take it back to base metal, sray paint hammerite onto it - spray gives a more even coating that the tinned variety. leave it to dry - details on can. make sure the hammerite will work on that type of metal - it works differently on different types of metal.

option 2: depending on the metal, you could anodize/powder coat it.

option 3 : new gloves
