how do they work? would they email you? im pretty carfull ever since my steam account got stolen so heres the title header..

    online@hmrevenue.info

and this is the info there given me...

Tax Refund: You are eligible to receive a tax refund of £ 463.38

After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of £ 463.38.
Please submit the tax refund request and allow us 15-30 days in order to process it.

ATENTION: Insufficient or incorrect information may lenghten the whole process. Usually does not take more than one week from the date you have provided us with your details. In some cases (especially submitted by those without permanent National Insurance Number) this may take considerably longer.

You have 48 hours to complete your tax refund claim. To access the secure form for your tax refund, please click here

the link it then takes you to is this,

    http://mail.pointshop.kr/~mysql/hmrc.gov.uk/

now ive browsed the site and it looks legit but this link is different from the rest....so im unsure on trusting it

""edit"" im sure its a scam, just looked into it more lol

Surely any notion that HMRC would actively notify you that you are due a tax refund highlights it is a scam....?

Either that, or you are unbelievably optimistic

Re: hm revenue and tax refunds?

If in any doubt contact them direct by googling their official website and getting the local office number. In this instance it's clearly a phishing site.

They do it to trick the gullible or unwary into revealing their private data. Its called identity theft. Next e mail will be asking you for your bank account details "so the refund can be paid to you"

By the way, if you do get that email - ddon't reply to it.

And.. if you get an e mail "from UPS" with what appear5s to be a pdf of a delivery card attached - don't open it.

If you get an e mail from a bank ssking you to verify your account details and password - its a scam

If you get an e mail from someone saying that they want you to receive N millions from some mysrerious benefactor who died in a plane crash/died of cancer/died in mysteriopus circumstances - don't reply - its a scam (although with a bit of care and a freemail account created for the purpose, you can have fun stringing them along )

And if you get an e mail saying that your e mail was entered into a lottery draw - and has won - that is also a scam.

    Hope that helps.

How exactly would the HMRC have obtained your email in the first place?

As above, massive scam. HMRC only ever write to your home address.

Re: hm revenue and tax refunds?

I remember this receiving a massive amount of press when it first 'hit', I've had to completely abandon my hotmail account as I receive nothing but spam.

Astounds me that gmail can effectively pick up spam and phishing mails, but hotmail - the brainchild of the 'god' that is Bill Gates, can't.

Which is why this scam is used - pretty much everyone thinks they pay too much tax, so they're willing to suspend rational thought when they're presented with the suggestion that they were right and can get some of the money back!

Well - not strictly true - if you register for some HMRC on-line services, they (HMRC) will ask for an e-mail address so that you can be sent notifications (successful online filing for example) - however they would never ask for a national Insurance number or any other personal details.

However this (and other) scams have received a lot of press coverage, and even if the content looks plausible, a quick check of the mail headers will show up the scam. Or a quick Google search!

Re: hm revenue and tax refunds?

HMRC will never send you a rebate without you first submitting a tax return unless it's the result of an audit. And if you're being audited you will certainly know, with all correspondence from them via snail/paper mail, never by email.
