What's with the google homepage?
They've put huge background images that look awful at my resolution. Have they just got stupid executives in power now who are changing things for the sake of it?
The fading in bar at the top was gorden brown retarded but this background malarkey....

It's just publicity for the new background image feature, likely it will be back to normal tomorrow.
It's obviously a blatant attempt to persuade you to sign up to google so you can turn the image off, in return for giving Google all of your personal information and search history directly tied to your email address and bank account.

Trying to be like Bing?
It's almost laughable how similar their interfaces are now, but Bing has been doing backgrounds since it started. (I encourage you to load up the same search in two tabs and flick between them to see just how uncanny it is)

I've always found bing less reliable for getting me relevant search results, although that could just be because I've trained myself to Google's search methodology: but I can put the same search into both Bing and Google and I get significantly more relevant results on the first page in google than on the first page in bing...
As such, I've not spent much time using any features of Bing...

Since I got Chrome I don't think I've fired up the google homepage, actually. I just search from the chrome address bar.

I hate BING with a passion, who the hell had the bright idea of turning your address bar into a search bar, my customers have enough trouble using IE without searching the entire web when i get them to enter an ip address.
