Question How to word a CV?

Following on from this thread, can anyone give me help on how to go about writing a CV please?

The problem I'm having (apart from the fact it's been 10 years since I had to do a CV ) is that my partner has no "formal" qualifications and has only had 1 temporary job just before Christmas. He has self taught (with guidance when needed from friends) himself on all aspects of the things listed in the other thread (as well as other things to do with pc's) but the reason he has only had 1 temp job is for the last 5 years he has been a SAHD (stay at home dad) while I've been working, but now is looking to join the wonderful world of working.

Can someone give me advice on how to put these things down on paper please? Also does anyone know how to go about finding out what GCSE's he passed as he can't remember

    TIA

Don't worry about school qualifications, they are never checked unless it's at degree level or professional e.g. if he goes for a job as a Cisco CCNP he had better have a certificate to back it.

    Format should be something like:

    Personal details and contact details:
Functional summary:....what he's good at...if nothing then lie...no one can check...but this is a good place to write about self taught ability
Employment history: with latest job first and dates...use bullet points and things like...'responsible for...' and 'accountable for...'
Education: don't worry if he can't remember grades just take a guess. Any professional or higher education qualifications better be backed by certificates though.
Interests: Just a synopsis....It helps to show the character of the individual.
Languages: even if it's just a working knowledge.

First page is most important as you need to make an impression that will make an employer want to read the rest. Also use 'buzzwords' HR departments rarely know what the hell they are looking at and will look for buzzwords such as MCSE, CCNP etc. If you can do the job but don't put those in then you may well get binned as the right labels aren't there so look at the advert for what they are after.

Keep it short and to the point. That's about it really. If I sound a bit cynical it's because I am. As a contractor I have to fire out a CV storm every 3 to 6 months on average. HR departments are the bane of my life. Good luck.

Best of luck to the other half. Remember, the CV/covering letter is to get an interview, not a job.

The good news is that the economy is turning around and work is coming back. Personally I've had to fight for scraps (i.e. 3 months in India...yukk) for the past two years and now my phone is in meltdown with agents asking my availability. So this could be a good time to be thinking of getting back to work

There is Daniel, but didn't want to use it as I don't like it (can you guess who's got the job of typing it up?)

Thanks again RVF500 and glad that you are in demand
