    Credit card fraud

Just to remind all members to be careful when using their debit ot credit card.
I have recently found out I was a victim of fraud. According to my bank I have been hit by aleast 15 transactions from the far east mainly India, they rejected them but 2 got through taking over £150 off me.
My bank has refunded me the money but now my card is block until I get new one and the only way for me to get at my money is to go into a branch with proof of ID.

I have no idea how my details were taken.

So if you are reading this. Please be careful.

    Re: Credit card fraud

Welcome to the club I got stung for £640 two weeks before Christmas a couple of years ago (a rogue employee with a gambling habit as it went on a gambling website) then a 1.5 years ago a £30 quid charge to O2 showed up that I'm pretty sure was part of the google hack that happened around that time. Just thinking about it makes me want to to do unpleasant things to the thieves with a bacon slicer. as for how they got their hands on your details it's possible that someone who works in a call centre and has access to customer details sold on yours (there was a news story sometime ago about Indian call centre staff selling on details, though in that case it was to other companies).

its happened to me too, fortunately i check my banking closely and noticed the next day and only lost £200, mostly on phone vouchers and pc equipment. i think it was a petrol station that copied my card.

i only use tesco/morrisons for petrol due to them having cameras on the tills and the shop, if i get caught out i put £10-£20 in and pay by cash until i can get to one i trust.

    Re: Credit card fraud

The hassle sucks, I agree. But with credit cards it's great that you get the money back fairly easily. Imagine if there were no laws to protect us against card fraud.. some random guy in india uses your card for £150 and you gotta stump up the bill!

Both of the Shell garages close to where I work operate the same now, mainly because both are heavily competitive on price and used by lots of people

    Re: Credit card fraud

Sainsbury give you the option of paying at the pump now, IIRC, so you don't even have to get your card near anyone. I imagine that chip&pin has somewhat reduced the amount of carding done at petrol stations because you don't have to physically hand over your plastic for someone to swipe.

    Re: Credit card fraud

I've had my 3 different barclaycards done in the last 6 months. The first I'd used once online at comet about 3 months before the fraud, the other 2 had been used at ebuyer and republic a couple of times. Fortunately I got my money back without too much fuss but it does seem to be a real problem and no explanation can been offered from barclays or any of the stores I've used.

    Re: Credit card fraud

Girl opposite lost 20k from her savings acount.

taken out at 50 per day, 5 x £100 transactions at cash amchines all over London.

Only got flagged by bank when she ran out of cash, totally ridiculous. Refunded of course.

Another guy told us a story about being in Leicester Square and accidentally pulling a fraudelent front off a cash machine!

    Mental.

    Re: Credit card fraud

My problem's always been the other way round - make a couple of unusual purchases and my bank have been all over me checking if it really was me. The worst one was Santander - they blocked my card at about 10.30am one morning - no warning, no phone call, nothing: just stopped working despite the fact that it is regsitered with "Verified by Visa" - and didn't actually contact me to arrange to unblock it until after 6pm. Absolutely shocking service.

HSBC were much better - any time I made a couple of unusual transactions (like buying 2 tickets to America and an MSDN subscription on the same day ) a real person was on the phone within half an hour to check that it was me making the transactions. Very good service

    Re: Credit card fraud

Damn ShopTo's flawed security (only time I used that card up till then), thanks to the Hexus number who mentioned the problem he had with ShopTo as I rarely check transactions on that card (given that it's so infrequently used), and kudos to RBS for resolving the issue smoothly.
