    Earth younger than thought

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science_a...t/10577055.stm

A new geological study has set a more accurate age for planet Earth, according to scientists.

Researchers say their investigation shows the Earth is 70 million years younger than the 4.537 billion-year-old planet "we had previously imagined".
Now this is amazing that the scientific community is getting such accuracy, I mean 70 million years is peanuts in the grand scheme of things, I just find it astonishing that they can say for certain anything beyond the nearest billion!

That said, the 'tard brigade, be they flat earthers, or religious fundamentalists will probably still ignore it.

But anyway, figured it was worth sharing with the geeks on hexus, who might find the accuracy they can get from 182-hafnium and 182-tungsten isotopes fascinating!

Yeah, we're whittling it down all the time. Although the nuclear soup in the planet's core can make things tricky.

    Re: Earth younger than thought

I just finished reading 'the Greatest Show on earth' by dawkins...truly fascinating, and it goes into the subject of atomic clocks and many more related and interesting subjects...

In this book, there are some polls at the end which conclude that half of the population in the USA think that the earth has been created recently in the current form.

Funnily enough, an incredible number of people think that the earlier human race once lived with dinosaurs O_o

But again, some people still believe that there's an 'invisible old man' staring at them and checking every actions they do...

    human stupidity is just....incredible

hmmm, I wonder how the results would turn out if you just discounted those that replied "don't know, don't care"?

I personally don't have a problem with people not being right about these kinds of things, it has absolutely no bearing on their lives or the lives of others. The exception to this are those that actively promote alternative realities that are completely baseless and fictitious.

    Re: Earth younger than thought

So this week we've found out that the earth is younger than thought and that they've been measuring particles like protons wrong for 30 years....

I bet the creationists nutters are having a field day with this information

    Re: Earth younger than thought

Saying they had the age of Earth wrong before is a really negative way of putting it, they just have a more accurate estimation of the true age of the planet.

    Re: Earth younger than thought

Technically speaking they have a more accurate estimate of the Earths age based on a set of assumptions and calculated using current theory... added to which as soon as you get your answer it is wrong because the earth is still aging... you can begin to see why scientists are a tad "strange"... oh and yes I include myself in that, especially so as studied the philosophy of science as well

    Re: Earth younger than thought

What's the accuracy of that estimate in real terms though? I mean, it strikes me that 70m years in 4.5b is actually just an expression of experimental / measurement error. If it's now 4.477bn years give or take 50m then that 70m isn't really much of an advance

And let's not get carried away with "say for certain". They've made an estimate based on a reasonable scientific theory, but as any good philosopher of science will tell you all scientific theory is wrong Frankly I'd rather people were doing something more useful than refining the age estimate of the earth by < 2%...
