    I must be getting older

I can't do the staying up till the small hours of the morning anymore. 10 years ago I could stil be up till 3am and not feel tired, but now every part of me is sleepy and it's hard to focus on my PC and I also can't type straight !

the only reason I'm still up is that the house is pretty much empty, my sister as you know has moved out and the parents have gone camping so it's just me and the cat.

There's somethng so odd about being the only one in the house when it comes to bedtime though. It doesn't feel right.

Re: I must be getting older

I used to stay up all damned night as a youngster. I thought nothing of doing important work at about 3 a.m. and then handing it in at 9 a.m. I remember calling my mother just before a final exam and she said "Oh, you're up early," to which I said "I haven't been to bed, yet!"

Then, something changed when I reached my mid 20s. Anything after midnight became a bit of a chore. It got worse as I reached my late 20s. Now I'm in my late 30s and when I go to a L.A.N. with some mates it usually takes a rarefied mix of Coca Cola and junk food to keep me semi-functioning til about 2-3 a.m. I'm the oldest there. Late L.A.N.s will often mess me up for days now.

If it's any consolation, it gets worse as you get older! (At least, it does for me!)

Re: I must be getting older

pffft - just wait till you have kids, the joys of being woken up throughout the night ensuring you have a really broken sleep and end up walking into the office like a zombie from dawn from the dead just like I did this morning.

I was woken at 2,3,6,6.45 this morning and thank god I'm only used to having 4-7 hours sleep a night or I'd be so braindead, but I'm functional so that's a good thing.

Oh and as you get older, it does get harder to recover from the all-nighters as well. At one point I used to be a real night owl, chasing lasers till god knows what time in the morning and used to be able to function okay. Now, it takes me 1/2 a day to a full day to get over any midnight manoeuvres.

Re: I must be getting older

Once I'm asleep I'm a pretty heavy sleeper. We had quite a bad thunder and lightning show this time last year, and I slept right through it, a rocket launcher could have been set off down the road and I still wouldn't have woken up.

I know the feeling. 5 years ago I could work 14 days solid without a day off. just worked two weekends for OT and I'm feeling like poo warmed up.

Yup! So was I listen to what Lee@Scan say, wait till you have kids! personally I have no problems staying up gaming till 2 am, then getting up at 6:30 to feed the kid, 1 hour veg time, then off to work! Catch up on weekends.

Re: I must be getting older

gaah, age! It really catches up with us.

The most noticable thing for me is how little I can drink of an evening and still function the next day. That and the fact that I don't think I'd be able to pull the 48+hours solid thing anymore (the joys of working nights when I was 21 ) The sleep / late nights thing has never really affected me though, because I've never been a morning person anyway so the whole concept of getting up before ten has always disgusted me (yes, I hate office jobs), regardless of what time I go to bed...

Re: I must be getting older

Daytime drinking also really suffers. If I have a lunchtime pint of Guinness, for example, then that's pretty much me out for the rest of the afternoon.

Old age is a terrible thing.

Hmmm, I'm not so bad with a lunchtime pint. Wouldn't want to risk any more than that though
