    Rsi

    Hi

Does anyone know a way of reversing/preventing/helping this at all?

I've been experiencing a tingling sensation in my hands recently, usualy after using a keyboard continuously for any legnth of time, also get an odd sensation in my hands when i have an increased heart rate (Is that related?) Along with a tolerable but still mildy annoying pain in my wrists i think im beginning to see early signs of it. Is this common for people my age? (Im only 18) I can't really give up the PC as my entire carrer plan is based around programming. i finish college in a few eeeks so i will be able to take a break (Wil this help?) I've also heard that you can buy wrist supports that help, anyone know if a) These exist? b) Do they work? c) Where can I buy them? I've recently ordered one of those ergonomic keyboards to try and reduce strain but I still use the laptop a lot and as far as im aware im stuck with a standard keyboard there. Is there anything else I can do? Excersizes or somthing?

    Any Help Appreciated

Lynni I think what he means is when his heart beats faster his hands tingle - probably RSI causing bloodflow problems.

I get and up a stretch now and then. I also use an MS natural keyboard at home - they rock!

you can get gel wrist rests for keyboards, but ergonomic ones have for them inbuilt iirc, but you can get small ones for your mouse too from PC world or other such officey type places. Think they're cheap ish, i've got one cos i used to get a sore wrist from using gfx packages a lot, and it helped

I never really experience any pains from using my PC.

I do inadvertently get up and stretch/walk and look out the window for a bit quite often though... It's completely random and automatic... Lol

    RSI is very serious.

Please, dont mess about with it, see a Doctor. I had serious RSI a while back, and its not a laughing matter.

Agent is right RSI can be very serious. I would definitely advise seeing your GP or a physio about it. Especially if it is an important part of your life.

From a musicians point of view the kind of symptoms you are describing could be quite serious. I know a someone who had to stop playing for a few months because of RSI. She was only xperiencing the early effects but she had to take a complete break for a few months and take training in relaxation etc.

As has been said try and take breaks from the computer and relax your hands. Also make sure your hands arnt tense when typing etc.

I agree for you to go see doctor regarding this. I actually have to go back to doctor myself as mine has got a lot worse and I know suffer from a numb hand (other half will tell you what it's like when I stick it on him to get some heat into it ) also getting pains right up my arm into my shoulder now.

You may only be showing early signs of it, but you should get it seen to now, as it isn't fun having constant pain (even when you're not using keyboard etc) and having 1 numb hand

I have a gel wrist rest for my keyboard at work and it is good. A lot better than the foam one I have at home. Also if you're looking at getting a mousemat with wrist rest, I would go for gel on that too.

Dont bother with wrist rests, go the whole hog and get a natural keyboard, and if you dont touch type now then they are a great reason to learn. I get extremely bad RSI from playing Tiger Woods on the Xbox so guess what no Tiger Woods for me anymore. It got so bad that I would cry out in pain when trying to move my wrist, nothing else does it to me really cept Tiger Woods, strange but true. MS natural keyboard is the best move I ever made with regard to hardware.

Naturals are great - over time they actually make you learn how to touch type - well maybe not the "correct" way (I tend to favour the first three fingers on each hand still) - but then again the "correct" position tends to give you RSI anyhow....

The best general advice I think you can give with RSI and related issues is to:
    1) Make sure you're comfortable - your position should have as many of your muscles at rest as possible - you shouldn't have to reach to get to anything you use often
    2) Fidget - move about, take breaks, look up from your position often
    3) If it hurts - stop! Find some other way to do it instead.

I remember my doctor being worried about my heart rate a couple of years ago - turned out that 6 cans of coke and 5 coffees a day isn't good for you...
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

Rythmic is right regarding "correct" touch typing. This can actually cause RSI (part of the reason I have it). The doctor advised me to 1 finger type, but this is extremely hard to do when you have done nothing but touch type for the last 12 years

    I touch type properly.

I haven't had problems yet. However, I do type a bit like a pianist plays the piano - sometimes when I hit space my hand goes up into the air elegantly, lol. I'm also a very relaxed typer, so hopefully if I won't have any major problems in the future.
