Help me get a job please

Once again, I'm turning to the HEXUS Massiv' for some help and advice.

Basically.. I signed on for the 2nd time today and was given a job vacancy to apply for that really appeals to me, I don't know why it appeals, it just does.
It's working in a hydraulics shop/warehouse, serving customers, sorting out the warehouse, all that stuff.. 37 hours a week, £6 an hour, only a 10 minute bike ride away.

Basically.. I need help on how to make my CV as good as possible, I need help with what to write in a letter and just general tips on how to be successful in getting a job.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide .

Can't really help you with that, but just wanted to say good luck

Working in a warehouse can be great. Word of warning though, you will getting the p*** taken out of you constantly simply because you are the new young guy. Try not to take offence. We rip our young lad constantly, sometimes he deserves it, others not so much. It's just the way it is though

Re: Help me get a job please

Do write a cover letter, as it makes your CV stand out, makes you seem more polite and conscientious. It doesn't have to be long, just something like

"Dear Sir, I would like to submit my application for the job of Warehouse Operative, as I believe I am [enthusiastic, good at learning blah blah]. I am also [good at something related to the job] and think I would be very suited to the role. I enclose my CV and look forward to hearing from you."

As for the CV, make it short and sweet. For this application, I'd say don't worry about listing every single qualification you have (I always put something like A-levels: A,B,C,C), just try to get across that you're enthusiastic and have practical skills relevant to the role. Remember that no-one actually enjoys reading CVs (and most will skim read it at best), so make it to the point and get across your enthusiasm, willingness to learn etc. Most of all, get someone else to spell check it.

    Good luck with the application!

Re: Help me get a job please

Ring the company and request who would be best to send your CV to. Try and get an actual person as opposed to employment@warehouse.com. A personal cover letter, emphasis your qualities & how they would benefit the company directly. Post your CV as an attachment here (personal details replaced with generic joe blogs ones etc) so we can give some constructive feedback. A good CV & covering letter are worth everything!

Once you have sent them, give a follow up phone call a couple of days letter (this is why sending your cv/covering letter to a particular person is always good), introduce yourself, ask if they received your CV and have had time to review. If they still don't get back to you, ring again a few days letter. Always polite, never pushy/impatient.

    Best of luck mate!

Re: Help me get a job please

One other tip, when applying for warehouse work, never come across *too* posh or polite. Chances are unless the warehouse manager is a complete stuck up idiot, they'll want staff that fit in.

Biggest thing to emphasis is your reliability, if you've not had a job before, point out things you did on a regular basis, or represented a regular commitment like after school sports. Other tick boxes tends to be time keeping, and work ethic.

"He's only the apprentice and we're only having fun !"

I pulled a prank on a new lad many years ago when I was still working, I told him to go and ask the warehouse manager for a long stand in the TV department.

Should have seen the young lad, he fell for it hook line and sinker !

"Alan, Simon said I had to ask you for a long stand in the TV department" Says the young lad

Alan gets my sense of humour and replies

"Ok, go and stand in the middle of the TV department and I'll be there shortly"

And thats where the young lad stood for 20 minutes before he was asked by the duty manager at the time why he was stood in the middle of the TV department doing nothing, customer near enough wet themselves laughing when the lad replied

"Simon told me to ask Alan for a long stand in the TV department"

Then he stopped for a few seconds and thats when the penny dropped, the look on his face was priceless !

However like others have said put a covering letter with your CV, on the letter detail which postion your applying for. Try and find out the name of the person who will be reading your letter/conducting the interview and mark it for their personal attention.

If you need some help with how to lay out your letters mate, I've got some good examples.

I always try to give as good as I get, if someone else says something silly It's my duty to capitalise, more senior or not, just depends on the level of innuendo required (and the typical "thats what she said!" one liner retort )

Re: Help me get a job please

Hi Matty, this will be a bit of a disjointed post, up early and about to go to work.

I work quiet closely with the warehousing crew at work, if you have any questions I can ask the manager.

Basic thing with this kind of job is to get past the CV, if you get to an interview it tends to involve the people that you would be working with, and your character tends to be more important than any qualifications.

In your CV and covering letter look at showing that you are numerate, conscientious, used to using computers, especially office apps. You would be surprised at how many people have turned up for jobs and haven't used a computer, and don't want to. If your reasonably young being keen can be a big positive in your favor, if the warehouse manager is surrounded by knuckle dragger's he/she might be glad of somebody thats looking to move up the chain.

What work experience have you already got? Working in a shop would be handy, especially if you had any kind of awards, or extra responsibilities.

Try and address anything they say they wan in the job advert in the cv or covering letter. If you drop me your email I will forward some cv writing stuff I have to you.

    Good luck

    Jon

Matty, I was an electronics capital goods sales manager for a big part of my career and am well versed in the black arts of CVs, both making my own and reading hundreds of others before selecting interviewees. If you wanna PM/email me a copy of yours I can give it the once over if u like.

Haven't really got much to add other than to say good luck, and if they send you off on some sort of strange-sounding errand that you're not familiar with, sneakily google it on your phone to make sure you're not missing a joke

Re: Help me get a job please

You had another job not so long ago right? Point out what you did well and make it relevant to this new job. They will also likely ask why you're not in that job anymore, and probably look for a reference from there as a priority.

I think I'll use that as a basis for my letter actually, gonna get it written and emailed off now. Need to get my CV sorted out though, that's the difficult part.

I'll include my GCSE and 1st year A level results.

    Best of luck mate!
the person is Peter Brown, email is peterb@...... .

I'll get the CV written now and post it up before I send it off, I'm sure you lot can help point out anything I should or shouldn't have in.

Biggest thing to emphasis is your reliability, if you've not had a job before, point out things you did on a regular basis, or represented a regular commitment like after school sports. Other tick boxes tends to be time keeping, and work ethic.

If you need some help with how to lay out your letters mate, I've got some good examples.
Could I ask for those examples please? They'd be very helpful .

Definitely need to give as good as I get .

    Good luck

    Jon
I worked in Somerfield for 23 months, had an absolutely perfect record there, never ever late, no "tellings off" or owt like that, I just got let go as one of the unlucky ones.. Then I got a job in ASDA recently but I was getting taken as a mug and being given all the crap shifts and being told "This is what all the new staff do." Then when I said I couldn't work the weekend a couple of times I was then told to leave.

I'll post it in here if that's ok .

I'll make sure to give it a quick Google, don't want to seem like a spanner that falls for all the tricks .

I'll have to get myself a reference then, how do you go about getting one? Just go in and ask?

Good luck with the job mate. I am useless at cover letters and the like, but from whats ive seen, some good advice given.
Yeah, all just went to pot, from both ends really; I kinda went off the idea and Ford decided they're not in the financial situation they were to take on any apprentices.

Re: Help me get a job please

And one more thing I've been thinking, would it be a good idea to offer to work for a fortnight for free? As a trial period, the Job Centre do a thing where they give me £5 a day to pay for dinner and travel cos it increases chances of getting hired by a decent amount.

That way, at the very worst, I decide I absolutely hate it and continue looking, or I really like it and he takes me on..

You don't normally need to get one in advance, just have someone in mind that you're okay with your new company to ask for one from. As a courtesy ask that person for permission to use them as a referee before including their details in the CV/covering letter. If you do want to get something in advance then use something like linkedIn and get them to give you a 'recommendation' (which you can then use as a generic reference), but in general new employees want to get a reference for themselves so that you don't see it.

I wouldn't have thought of offering that by default, but I guess in response to a clear job position it might not be too bad if you think you'll come across better in real work than in interview.
