Does anyone else despise the layout of Office 2007/10?

Ok ok, I use it all day, every day, my Outlook is open in the background, I use word and powerpoint all day for tech documents and training material and when I get home I use it for writing and designing.

    But I'm losing my patience.

No really, its like the most irritating thing on the planet - which is made all the worse by Windows 7.

Im a snap user, I drag the windows to the side so I can see specs on one side of a 24" display and write on the other, do that and half your interface buttons disappear, only visible if you expand the whole bloody screen again.

Defeat the purpose, yes, irritate the hell out of an overworked, underpaid user abso-bloody-lutely.

Grr at you MS, grr at you, this is not normal, its not natural and I want my drop down menus back god dammit.

    Ok rant over.

Yup, can't stand it, they seem to have taken all the really useful bits and hidden them away into the most inaccessible places possible..

Has anyone at Microsoft ever done a proper UAT session? sheesh!

I completelly agree - I can never find what I want in those new menus. They should at least give the option to revert back to dropdown menus!! Office 2010 SP1 addin???

    Yup, pain the bottom...

I do however like how they've hidden uncommon commands like 'save' to ensure a clutter free view....

Re: Does anyone else despise the layout of Office 2007/10?

I have to say I've gotten quite used to it by now. I did have quite a few headaches but once you suss the general pattern of hiding advanced commands via the little expand button under each section of ribbon it's just a matter of remembering which ribbon groups which commands. OK yeah that does sound bad but it's not any worse than the old dropdown system.

Re: Does anyone else despise the layout of Office 2007/10?

I used to be a self proclaimed "advanced" user of Excel and Access. Back when I worked in Finance if someone wanted something done in a spreadsheet or simple database, I was the guy to go to. Ironically, I stopped using them so much when I left Finance to work in IT a few years back.

In my last company we had a request come through to setup a database for a customer with the ability to export data into Word and create letters and mailing labels. Easy huh? He had Office 2007, so no...

I spent 5 hours working on the so called simple project the night before going to the client to set it up and get it running, it was like I was working with completely different programs! I knew what I wanted to do, I could've done it in 30 minutes on 2003 or prior, but the new interface caused me so many problems!

Anyway, +1 to hating the "ribbon" system. Sadly, you can't even change it back to the original layout.

Re: Does anyone else despise the layout of Office 2007/10?

I honestly thought there was nothing wrong with how it was laid out from 95 - 2000, why they felt the need to make it overly complicated like it is now I don't know.

I remember when the rep came into us when I was working and was showing it off. When I asked was it compatible with documents created in Office 97 - 2000 he said no. It was compatible with 2003 and up but nothing before that.

He wasn't best pleased when I showed him that indeed it was compatible with documents from Office 97 to 2000.

Re: Does anyone else despise the layout of Office 2007/10?

here be the biz: when MS was brainstorming Office 2007, trying to figure what else they could cram into the beast, they did some market research. They asked this group what they wanted to see in the new version. Feedback was pretty alarming, i.e. 90% of what was requested was already in the apps, but people had no idea.

Sooooo, they decided to rejig the entire interface, creating context-sensitive toolbars (like Photoshop), which would prompt users with functionality. Fact.

    Does it work? Yes.
Do users of the old system like it? Generally not (no-one likes change etc)
Can one work faster in the new system? Yes, once one is accustomed to it.

You can bring back the old toolbars with paid plugins, but in so doing, you lose new tools (eg the range and breadth of Conditional Formatting in Excel).

I get corporate peeps to understand the how and why of the new system, and once they understand the logic, there's always major enthusiasm. Sounds like many peeps have simply had it thrust at them....

One can never stop saying Thank You

Re: Does anyone else despise the layout of Office 2007/10?

It just seems like they have designed a new car and have decided that the handbreak doesn't need to be next to the gear stick, thats being too sensible.

So they move the handbreak and locate it next to the bonnet release lever and then decide they want to put the gear stick on the roof just out of your reach.

If people are happy with the layout of something and it's easy and familiar then why move it ? Because it looks better ? Because they needed to justify charging big bucks for some more bloated software ?

glad its not just me, I mean I wouldn't mind, but each time I go to the ribbon for something other than save I usually have to go through three or four tabs to find what I'm looking for...

The saving grace is I've memorised more keyboard shortcuts than ever before now
