    Tenant advice needed

    Dear all

Clever folk that you are, I thought you might be able to assist in something less technical in my time of need.

My landlady is rubbish. Takes an age to come back to me on everything I've raised, yet I'm nothing but the perfect tenant (bar the 5.1 speakers + Onkyo amp I recently invested in ).

My latest issue is upon checking my electricity bill, I went to find the meter. In my flat, they're all on the ground floor behind some service doors. The one marked '11', signifying my flat number, has a completely different meter reference to that quoted on my Southern Electric bill. I had a look at the other meter reference numbers, and none of them match what is quoted on my bill.

Am I likely to be paying for someone else's usage? I want her to contact Southern Electric and get to the bottom of it as it's her property. Is my stance here correct? She's even seen it in the flesh when she came and had a look at some other bits nearly 3 months ago and agreed that it is wrong. Despite me texting, calling, and leaving messages she has not come back to me.

    Discuss.

    Thanks!

I think southern electric created your bill with estimated readings.

Either you can pay it, or get it amended depending on your current readings.

I would recommend to create an online account with them as it is more convenient to deal with any queries, compared to their phone support. furthermore you can submit your readings online too.

Have you tried contacting Southern Electric yourself to check? When we were renting, bills and suppliers were our responsibility. It will probably save you some time if you haven't already - and if they say they can't help then you have every right to check your contract to see if there is a clause that says you can defer rent until the issue is sorted.

If your MPAN doesn't match the one registered on the bill then you're paying for readings from someone else's meter, and as such someone else's usage. Is the meter in your name? If so you need to contact your provider and query the different MPAN. If it's in the name of the landlady then you need to take this up with her.

Read the first post again, it's the meter reference numbers that don't match.

Splash has covered it while I was typing r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w-l-y

And you beat me to the response!

Thanks all. I actually got it transferred into my name before the first bill arrived, so I guess its muggins' responsibility. Would be nice to hear that from her, though.

I'll give them a bell tomorrow when I've got all the details in front of me, will report back.

    Re: Tenant advice needed

This has also happened to me, though last time someone came to read the meter I told them the number was wrong and they said they'd sort it out for me. I'm paying by estimate but I hope they fix this. Can you let us know how it turns out please? Thanks

Certainly. Have taken the details of what I think my meter is (ref, reading as of 10:00pm last tonight) and am going to give them (Southern Electric) a buzz tomorrow.

    Re: Tenant advice needed

When you say Flat, is it a relatively new flat?

Because from experience of the two 'newish' flats I've lived in, none of the meter "numbers" have actually matched my actual Flat number.

For instance when I lived at Flat 12, my Parking Space and Meter 'number' was actually 36. The 36 was with reference to the Plot number, and obviously nothing to do with the Flat number...

The same happened at another newish built flat I moved to; Flat 4, Plot 12...

This might not be the case at all... but....
