How exactly is typing with a stylus supposed to be more efficient than a keyboard. Not meaning to be an apple basher or anything like that, even they market as a content delivery device. It's for watching movies and a bit of browsing. Any kind of formal correspondence must be horrible to input, I imagine even taking notes would be torture.
What exactly are they planning to 'do' with it? I fail to see how any kind of work undertaken by elected officials would be improved by one. The only possible thing I can think of is reading notes from it, but tbh you can buy a LOT of paper for £38,000, or I don't know a nurse, teacher or copper.
You can't even use a stylus with it, such is the stupidity of the iPad. Oh and you can watch movies, but not in HD, and with some lovely big black bars as its not widescreen. *ahem*
iPads are a waste of money even for a casual rich consumer..but for a council? I'd be complaining like mad if I lived there, unless they can offer some serious justification.
I can only assume the decision has been taken by someone who noticed that iPads are cheaper than conventional tablet PCs and assumed they were as useful

Classic 'Red Top' reporting..
Council may buy them. It will be reviewed after a trial. But I could see a case where delivering content via web browser and applying input via a touch screen (pull down menus, option oxes) could be useful. And if that is delivered efficiently to a content display device, and leads to efficiency savings - good for them.
And I'm quite sure that the council won't be paying the retail cost for them.

*****. Needless to say its a Labour majority council. One councillor justified the move claiming her laptop was ''heavy'' making it difficult to take to several meetings a day.
The arguement that a tablet style device as a replacement for printed documents is a good one actually, providing they stick to it and maintain proper record maintenance & backup. My only real concern is that by being an early adopter of the technology that cheaper, more suitable solutions may present themselves later down the line and also whether the backend technology is there (even if it's an intern to scan the original paperwork, make a PDF and shove it on a shared network drive)

i really don't care for MS either. My outrage is from the fact they are considering buying new hardware! + this proposed hardware has competitors/equivalent products that do the same job, better and a lot cheaper.
it's like when that MP had the £600 a roll wall paper. whats wrong with BnQ?
