Conspiracy to force us to upgrade?

It angers me that whenever one get some new computer hardware, the operating system is immediately make it a slow as an old computer. Why does Microsoft do this.

A friend has bought an entry-level dual core laptop with windows seven and it's ridiculous, my single core PC running XP is much faster and more responsive I've got 1.5 gig of RAM they have three gig.

It's like if something works well they will make it obsolete, and that new software will keep you on the edge of just about having a crap computer. It all feels like a total conspiracy between Microsoft and the hardware makers. bastards.

    Eh?

Windows 7 runs better on older hardware than Vista and sometimes even XP.

    It angers you?!

A little extreme don't you think.

Nothing different to alot of other things out there, not just kept within the I.T segment.

Re: Conspiracy to force us to upgrade?

Without knowing the full spec of both PCs it's pretty hard to say. Is the laptop running a mobile CPU and/or GPU, both would be quite a lot slower than a similar desktop version. Is the laptop full of crudware put there by the retailer? Etc...

Re: Conspiracy to force us to upgrade?

Personally I love the way Microsoft has forced up the level of machines over time, my first PC cost me £4k (486DX66 a massive 32meg of memory, 1.3 gig hard disk and a 1 speed cdrom!), I bought such a "high spec", because I wanted to run unix (solaris) on it. Now I could buy any POS computer and it would be good enough for my programming/Unix needs. Thank you microsoft for giving me cheap computers! Though I prefer to not run your OS if I don't have to.

Re: Conspiracy to force us to upgrade?

You don't buy a horse, put it in a cart, then drag it around. That would be silly. Similarly you don't build a giant adding machine, then do its sums for it on paper. Modern operating systems can do things that 10 or 20 years ago were impossible - automatic handling of hardware resources, network stacks, and so on. And this stuff takes more resources.

A 486 DX2 with Win3.1 boots real quick, and is pretty responsive, compared to a modern Core i5 with Windows 7 - but it's doing a [b]lot[b/] less.

And here's the thing - if I'm writing an OS which does more stuff, I want to do it in a way that is maintainable and fast to write, not painfully awkward (and potentially buggy) - the layers of abstraction that buy that development ease cost CPU cycles.

tl;dr: WinXP does less than 7.

Re: Conspiracy to force us to upgrade?

Mate, you need to uninstall all the bloatware on your friends laptop. That's why it is slowing down the computer, not Windows 7.

That is one thing I hate about Windows PCs, there is so much bloatware on them. I don't know if that is the computer manufacturers' fault or Microsoft.

edit - yes i don't want a $%)*("£Q trial version of Norton Antivirus or MSOffice. Get that crap out of new laptops!

Re: Conspiracy to force us to upgrade?

Something very wrong here - my single core Celeron M laptop runs 7 better than XP!

Check for the usual suspects - i.e. McAfee, Norton and any other value-added-crapware killing the OS.

Re: Conspiracy to force us to upgrade?

It's all that extra bloatware that comes with a new laptop or PC. It's all marketing, and the sad fact is the less PC literate people will leave it all on there and never remove it as they don't know how and will happily tolerate the system running slower as they don't know any difference.

I personally think any system sold today should just come with the operating system and drivers needed to run the hardware and thats it.

Does it *really* get more done for us though? I mean aside from x86->x86_64, what does modern software actually get done for us that software 10 years ago didn't?

The OP has a point TBH. Forced/planned obsolescence is pretty rife in the IT industry.
