OK I snore, very loudly. My wife can't sleep at nights, and you can hear it downstairs, next bedroom, throughout the entire house. There are many kinds of snoring, with me it's basically because I breathe through my mouth and not my nose - i find my nose to be almost permanently blocked.
I've tried:
Nasal strips (keeping nostrils open - so i breath through my nose instead of my mouth) limited success but failed.
Sprays (lubricates the back of the throat, in theory to reduce the vibration of the back tongue to the back of my throat) failed.
Strips of decongestant that you place on your tongue (supposed to make you breathe easier by unblocking your nose) minty fresh but failed.
Nasal clip (a metal device that is spring loaded that props open your nostrils) painful and failed.
Sleeping on my side, never been able to sleep on my side and i always return to my back so failed.
A few other pillows and things but all eventually failed.
Beginning of this year I brought a silicone device that you wear in your mouth they're called MAD (mandibular advancement device) basically it moves your lower jaw forward so the back of you tongue is lifted so it doesn't vibrate so much at the back of the throat.
Here's a piccy:
And it workedbut recently I've been getting jaw ache on the left hand side of my face. Hurt so much I was taking 2 ibuprofen each morning to stop the pain. I still used the device as the wife needs to sleep (pregnant, gets very tired).
Went to the dentist and he said the problem is that the device does not fit my jaw, obviously as it's designed to fit everyone's jaw. So he sent me off to the local dental lab. They got my dentist to make a mould of my teeth and they created this:
This fits my teeth perfectly and it's a tight squeeze to get it in my mouth, but it does workI can breathe as there's an opening at the front. Anyway I'm now a happy bunny, wife gets to sleep and I didn't even have to have surgery.
It's a very common issue and i thought I'll share my experience, it may help some of you.
