    Man gets £650k speeding ticket...

...and blames it on the speedo!
The driver, who has not been named, claimed that the car had recently been fitted with a new speedometer, which was faulty.
As if you wouldn't notice you were going almost 3 times the speed limit!

    Full article here.

    197mph in a 74.5mph zone.. sweet Jesus!

Surely you'd realise how fast you're going when the throttle pedal is touching the metal!

I think someone has misinterpreted something.

I expect that's a translation, but to me it sounds like he was saying the car is new, not the speedometer. The SLS has only been out for about a month or two, I believe.

There was an explanation I saw which said the fine is the maximum of 300 days wages. So it's the equivalent of the nice, round, UK figure of £650,000 in Swiss Francs. Yahoo makes it sound like the maximum fine is £2,166 per day. Sounds like a news report of a news report with added sensationalism.

Also, he was caught doing 300KMH(186MPH) not the car's top speed of 197mph.

His excuse is about as valid as this guy's argument.

It reads as if he hasn't yet been fined 650K, just that is the maximum possible for this offence.

OK, doesn't really matter if the car, or the speedo is new... you would realise you were going well over double the speed limit if you had ever driven at the speed limit before. The fact he claims the speedo was faulty is just a joke.

Both reports say he's facing a £650k fine. Doesn't really matter what he gets fined in the end, he's getting fined. And heavily by the sounds of it.

Oh, that makes it OK then.

I'll watch that later when not at work.

Still, the point was, who on Earth would not realise they were doing over double the speed limit without looking at the speedo??

Re: Man gets £650k speeding ticket...

I didn't mean to belittle it. His excuse was laughably pathetic and if he does get fined anywhere near that amount, it will be impressive. Good, though. I think he can either go to prison for up to 300 days or pay the equivalent days in wages. Scaleable fines make a lot of sense, down to a certain minimum.

My point was more that the Yahoo! news report sounded like a wishy washy Chinese whispers internet blog post, rather than having any kind of investigation into the facts. But that's standard Yahoo! News.

News source 1) The fine could be 1,000,000 Fr. (£608,550)

Source 2, taking the figure from source 1) The fine could be up to £650,000. (round figure, bigger number is more spectacular)

Source 3, taking the figure from source 2) The fine could be up to three quarters of a million pounds.

Source 4, taking the figure from source 3) The fine is expected to be almost a million pounds.

Source 5) He was fined ONE TRILLION DOLLARS!
