Unhappy Dodgy occurrence on my bank card

I found an alien item on my statement 2 days ago (a small donation to a charity, not made by me).

My bank was not a great deal of help, tbh; basically they gave me a number for the charity & told me to ring them direct for a refund. They made little attempt to work out how someone had got my card details, didn't suggest I cancel the card even (which I subsequently did) and didn't offer any advice. Pretty poor.

The thing is, it's a debit card I don't use a lot, there are a bare handful of recent transactions that could be suspect. The last transaction I made online using those card details (to a trustworthy mail order site) cleared the day before the dodgy amount. That's obviously setting off alarm bells that it could be related; a keylogger or what-have-you...

Previously I used the card twice, at 2 different ATMs, in the past 3 months - and made one online payment in May. That's all. Other than that it gets used only for Paypal & similar.

What should I do first to try & get to the bottom of it?

Re: Dodgy occurrence on my bank card

Fraudsters sometimes test card information by doing a test run by donating to charity. Once they know this works, they have in some instances in the past then gone on to order other things.

I would advise speaking to the bank explaining you think the card has become compromised and I would really ask them for a new card with a new number making the old one invalid.

^ I have done that, on the day, it's the fact that I don't know who/how has got hold of my details.

Did you click the little "donate to charity" box when you were using PayPal (eBay?)

Re: Dodgy occurrence on my bank card

Another way of verifying card details is by doing a test transaction. I had one of those flag up on my mastercard a while back. There was a £0.01 transaction for CarphoneWarehouse, as verification on a mobile contract, that alerted my bank. Card was stopped, new one was issued. I get very good service from my JohnLewis Partnership card in this regard.

I still have no idea who had got the card details or where they were from. They couldn't tell me which CarphoneWarehouse it was done from or whether it was online.

@mycarsavw; no I haven't, & besides this was a larger amount - they are usually £1 donations iirc, this was 2 £5's one after another.

The charity in question have handed this to the their IT dept but I'm sceptical they will get back to me with anything.

My chief worry is any compromise on my pc, as it's all well & good having a new card if someone is still able to log my use of it.

Re: Dodgy occurrence on my bank card

Seems you need some suggestions for some hardcore virus/malware removal programs.

Then once you can be 100% certain your computer has nothing on it, then use your new card.

Re: Dodgy occurrence on my bank card

If you've only used it on one PC, I'd just give it a quick run through with MalwareBytes. I'm guessing it is only the one since it's used so rarely?

If that finds nothing, then I guess at least you can rule out the PC as a concern.

Re: Dodgy occurrence on my bank card

I have fully updated spybot, and avast, & I have looked around net for further malware removal recommendations but (as with most things) there are a lot of suggestions, some contradictory. Not sure what to go for.

Thanks malwarebytes has come up a lot, and around these forums, so I will go with it. If it finds nothing, then that's a definite 100% that things are clear, is it..? (Yes, it's this pc only).

Re: Dodgy occurrence on my bank card

I would give MalwareBytes a quick run, it's a pretty good catch-all solution.

It probably won't find anything, but at least it's peace of mind?

Re: Dodgy occurrence on my bank card

The bank hasn't stopped the card and sent you a new one while they are asking you ring up the charity? I thought that's the first thing that normally happens. I also had two or three £5 transactions (O2 top-up) appear on a card that's has only been used once for an online purchase. The e-tailer, unsurprisingly, denied all wrongdoing (but later included Paypal payment options). The bank was great, they stopped the card, contacted me, and when I confirmed it was not mine, they sent me a new card and refunded me.

Re: Dodgy occurrence on my bank card

This was across 3 phone calls; 1 to report it, 1 to cancel the card, & 1 to confirm they were waiving overdraft charges* (typically, the £10 total went through a oneday window between some funds out & funds in, at a point when my balance was £7.20 ) *Needless to say that letter was in the post quick enough.

Apart from a bit of check-your-statements-regularly type advice (I do, that's how I found it by midnight the same day) no-one gave me any relevant card fraud advice.

Ok, here is the affected item:

    Registry Keys Infected:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{6fd31ed6-7c94-4bbc-8e95-f927f4d3a949} (Adware.180Solutions) -> No action taken.

Can I just go straight for 'Remove Selected' and will that be the end of it?

Also can I assume it was the cause of my problem?

    Doesn't suggest that it's a key-logger. Looking at the 'threat-level' legend, it's more of a minor nuisance :/
