    Mortgages

Anyone know a decent site that gives decent information about mortgages?

Type mortgage in Google and you get hundreds of companies trying to sell you one. I haven't got the foggiest about them, I just wanna learn more before going into an estate agents and making an arse of myself!

    Cheers.

Why will you make an arse of yourself by goin into an estate agents (everyone has to start somewhere )??? Get them to explain every option avaliable to you but dont be pressured into anything. Once explained you can browse the net in more detail the sort of mortgage best suited to you to go for.

I wouldn't trust an estate agent as far as I could throw one. They're a bunch of monkeys in suits.

The best person to ask would be an independent financial adviser - someone who isn't on commission. Search google, you're bound to find a list.

also most bulding societies have a webpage which will include info on mortgages (although remember they're trying to sell them to you so aren't offering independant advice)

100% agree with this advice. You NEED to see an IFA. Are you in London? I know a good independent one in the London area if you are interested...

Just started looking into this myself, having found and got another job on Friday, means moving out and getting my own place at last. Pretty hopeful that i have got plenty of stuff sorted out now, got 2 appointments with 2 different banks/building societies set for next Saturday. First place to start was working how much I can borrow and the right type of product for me

Estate agents don't supply mortgages so most any agents worth their salt will have an in-house IFA.

I looked into buying a place a couple of years ago, went into an estate agent's and found a wealth of knowledge.

At the end of the day they want you to buy a house - it's in their best interests to get you a good deal on your mortgage (cos it makes their house seem cheaper )

Personally I wouldn't go directly to a bank.

They want to sell you their own products.

Az, that Charcolonline link is superb.
The mortgage compare function is great, as well as the highlight to the Payment schedule, which highlights how much balance in interest/capital is different!.

    Thanks

Going into the housing market is daunting but there are plenty of people out there willing to help.
Every Estate Agent will have some kind of Financial Advisor they can recommend. And NEVER feel stupid asking what things are or if you don't entirely understand the process. It can be a little complicated at times but keep your wits about you and don't just jump for the first thing anyone offers you.
Take the time to read everything, ask about anything you don't understand and make sure you get something that works for you and your financial situation - not the product that they are currently pushing!! (However a good FA should not do this anyway).
You can never speak to too many people or read too much information regarding mortgages. Estate Agents help alot if you get a good one and an Independent Financial Advisor or Mortgage Broker is deffo the right way to go as they can get hold of products not readily available from the High Street.

All I can say is don't feel embarrased of perhaps feeling a little stupid to start with as everyone has to start somewhere (and sometimes playing a little stupid can help alot!!) - apart from this, once you are a little more aware, stick to your guns and just remember that this is a Long Term Financial Arrangement so get what suits YOU!

Good Luck - you will be cool!
If you're not living on the edge, you take up too much room

Thanks for the great advice so far, and some pretty good links there will get me doing some heavy reading when bored at work!

DaBeeeenster, yeah I live next to Heathrow but my parents have used the same IFA for the last 20 years, so would probably ask him. How much does your fella charge? I can't afford to get expensive advise!

Not sure there is a charge tbh. Most IFA's get a fixed fee cut from the mortgage lender. Prolly best to go with the people your folks use tbh...
