Advice required, laptop damaged in transit

My sister visited me not too long ago and managed to leave her laptop behind. Long story short, I packaged it up very well & posted it to her via parcels2go (using DHL). I paid for the insurance up to £350 and sent it on its way. 4-5 days later the package arrived back at mine with no visible reason aside from the box looking like it had been danced on.

The laptop was utterly buggered, screen had been cracked in a few different places, the internal packaging was knackered and the CD drive outer bit was broken. It's a write off.

I sent them a long letter, firm but & polite, explaining everything, with pictures and all the documents they requested, as well as requesting the £350 and delivery costs as well.

They e-mailed me back earlier on today saying that without proof of how much it's worth they were 'unable to proceed' with my claim. Now my problem is the laptop is a good 18months old, and my sister no longer has the receipt. I also can't find it for sale online? Can anyone offer any suggestions or advice? It's an Advent 5411, and so far I can't find anywhere stocking it.

Could be worth contacting the retailer it was purchased from, perhaps they may still carry a record of the sale.

Might be worth a shot, it was from a PC world store, though this was a couple of years ago!

Take down the serial numbers, contact PC World and may also be worth contacting Advent to see if they can track it to PC World.

Re: Advice required, laptop damaged in transit

You can go into any PCWorld or Currys and they can find your original reciept from your surname and postcode from the time of purchase (assuming it was your details given at purchase!). Also if you ask nicely they can print a sheet showing laptop make, model number, your name and address and original price paid.

    Hope this helps!

I'd be surprised if PC World can't help you, they're a public company and therefore required by law to retain details of all financial transactions for at least six years.

Was it paid for by card? Can you check the card records for the transaction. My online amex statements go back years. Find a second hand advert for the machine ebay? Prehaps write to Watchdog to try to embras them. Keep recepts for expensive things in future!

Yes they definatley can, if they can't then they either haven't had the training or they can't be bothered, the part of the system they need is called MCSD so long as you know the postcode your sister used when she bought it they'll be able to find it easily

Re: Advice required, laptop damaged in transit

It's definately not a case for Watchdog! It's perfectly normal procedure to ask for proof of the value of the item in the parcel to ensure they're not being conned and not that unreasonable. TBH the standard of proof is pretty low too (at least in my experience running claims for a mail order firm), just get something that shows how much it costs new, and then make sure your claim value is under that (e.g. if it was £600 new, a £350 claim should breeze through with photos of the damage)

Re: Advice required, laptop damaged in transit

dont know if anyone has said what im about to say yet but here goes.

Currys/PC world both have receipts electronically so if you know your name, address and date of purchase you can get receipt there.

Failing that, advent are DSGi s own brand so they will have some record of when each model is sold etc and what the prices were at the time, so if you contact the customer service they should be able to help you out. Hope this helps.

    Whey, nice one!
Parcel2Go are pretty fast with claims when you have all required paperwork, had a claim with them not too long ago and it was dealt with in a very timely manner.

They don't actually handle packages, they use carriers such as DHL, FedEx and UPS.
