    Help with a virus please...

    Hi all

Seem to be getting this page load everytime i boot up Internet Explorer at mo:

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.wilkinson26/weirdo.JPG

I have ran my now up-to-date AVG virus checker and it said i had 4 viruses. Of which i have removed 3, however one will not remove itself The name of this virus is Trojan Horse PSW.Briss.E and the reason it won't go away is because it messes with this .DLL file...

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\BRIDGE.DLL

How do i go about removing this folks, because it won't let me change my Home-Page when it boots IE up and 'hopefully' it isn't doing anything else damage wise.

Here is an image from AVG:

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.wilki...ovedammyou.JPG

    Thanks ppl

A few other bits to try just in case it comes back:

Get AdAware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com) and Spyware Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org). Make sure they're both up to date and do a scan. If neither of those work try Hijack This (http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/)... Though you can actually stuff things up with Hijack This if you don't know what you're doing.

    Tom.... AVG is pants..

Use NOD32 (www.NOD32.com) if I recall correctly... never failed me yet.. (touches wood). Auto-scans all your files while sittin in your systray, scans all files sent through instant messaging apps, scans email (outgoing and incomin), scans all files before executing (without you realising), looks pretty and best of all it uses next to NO resources on your PC... you can't tell it's their.

I'd recommend running AdAware 6.x, and Spybot Search and Destroy first, then remove AVG, install NOD32 and restart your machine.

NOD32 is free, auto updates and does all sorts!

also make sure you do this otherwise removing bridge.dll will result in the system saying unable to find file.

start >> run >> msconfig >> startup tab >> remove tick from item pointing to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\BRIDGE.DLL

    It's technically not a virus - It's spyware.
Search and destroy will nuke it

Right, been busy this morning updating just about everything and anything:

    • Not removed IE, but have now replaced it with Mozilla...looking good so far
    • Installed Ad-Aware, removed quite a lot of stuff
    • Installed Spy-Bot search and destroy
    • Installed ZoneAlarm
    • I think Bridge.DLL was removed by something, and I have now disabled it loading on Startup, no problems 'as yet'
    • Havn't removed AVG, because i still like it

Thanks for the link to NOD Nick but i am gonna stick with what i know on this one

Interesting stuff. My Norton is coming to the end of it's life so I'll have a look at NOD. I'll own up to being lazy and using IE cuz it's always there. I think I'll give firefox a go. Adaware is good. I have it installed on my laptop and home machine. I've just been on the Spybot website and think I'll give that a whirl too. I like the idea of NOD not using so many system resources. Norton firewall/anti-virus swallows shedloads of resources and is a bit of a nause. Which having been hit with the welchia worm after letting my subscription slip I tend to regard as a neccesary evil.
