    Same old Tory?

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2...eople-breeding

"We're going to have a system where the middle classes are discouraged from breeding because it's jolly expensive. But for those on benefits, there is every incentive. Well, that's not very sensible."

Well, what do you think? Is that just the mask slipping off the 'new' tory party?

Or does the man have a point?

    Re: Same old Tory?

There are working class idiots, middle class idiots, and upper class idiots. You can't generalise from any of them.

He almost has a point - see our discussion about child benefit changes where the idea of benefits as social engineering came up.

His point is perfectly valid, but the way he says it set a few old alarm bells ringing.

    Re: Same old Tory?

Of course it is the same old Tory, because why would they actually WANT to change?

They love to make the rich (of which their mps are members of) richer, and this is extremely clear just by looking at who invests in the party, who their lords are and what changes they have made, they sell public bodies to private companies so they can milk it for all its worth.

I do not see any way possible that a Tory party being in power benefits the working class, middle class somewhat, but as always the working class are shafted.

I've never thought he was a good poletition, but that is a compliment, he appears to say what he thinks is an honest account of things. Be it that there will be more savage cuts than the parties are admitting too (and dagnabbit if he'd been in power 7 years ago we wouldn't be in quite such the mess we are now!).

He also has a point. When you've got one set of people who are reliant on another set of people, the last thing you can do whislt sustaining the balance is have an increase in the dependants.

That means that people either have to pay more tax, loose other services, or go on the dole.

Often not so, so far the lowest classes of all are seeing tax breaks the likes of which labour failed to deliver in their last tenure.

I would say its the middle class that labour really benefitted. Those are the ones who got pointless tax credits (take money away from you only to give it back to you).

    Re: Same old Tory?

Bah... I don't know what to think.

One side of me says: God I'm glad there are some people that have the balls to say things like that, and I'm disappointed that he withdrew his remarks and apologised. I hate the way politics panders to the press. The system has plenty of checks and balances as it is, without the need to pander to media outrage.

Another side of me says: Only an utter tory twunt would use the word "breed" in a way that implies the lower class are akin to rats.

I don't think it really matters if he had been in power or not, recession is a natural part of capitalism... it is inevitable, just a matter of time whether you spend or don't spend, okay the Conservative notion of laissez-faire can work... but it can also not work as equally.

But if you watch the documentary kicking around on 40d .. 4trillion nightmare or something along those lines... you realise how little effect these cuts actually have, we are just covering the interest payment... yay...

And you think these tax breaks will compensate for the negatives? i.e. less jobs, less benefits, less help for families etc? seriously i know how much worse off my mom and dad are not the Torries are in to previously... they are just about keeping the house.

    Re: Same old Tory?

But surely you agree damage limitation is better than to just continue spending?

Not to mention the matter of principle in some cases effecting 'the scroungers'.

Well this is the thing... economists cant agree... because some other countries have spent their way out and actually gone straight into a boom... a big boom infact, others have dipped further... alot further haha, as i said both have working and non working experiences.

And it depends how you define scroungers? cut all benefits and you effect the people who are on it due to disability, or depression losing them a job and all the other genuine reasons... i do find it funny how the British have one of the best social security systems (benefits) in the world... and yet most of the country hate anyone on them.

    Re: Same old Tory?

I don't understand why people assume that poor people will automatically make more babies to get benefits?

It is the same silly fear that silly people have assuming every Tom, Dick and Harry (except themselves) are trying to rot the system of benefits.
