Thumbs up Every 1 in here its for your own benefit

right time and time again we see ppl say how adaware has done this that and tother so

1 - go HERE download spywareblaster 3.1 update it enable protection for all - this will prevent most spyware from being installed in the first place and takes up NO resources in doing so (ie those pop up windows that say yes/no to install **** - this stops them from installing if u accidentally click yes or your a moron and say yes to all those things anyway)

2 - go HERE and download spybot - search and destroy ,run and update this everyweek to get rid of any spyware that spywareblaster cannot protect against

with those 2 simple programs i have not had any spyware since i installed them
i have not had to remove those damn search bars that take over ie on my dads computer and the neighbour hasnt needed me to sort his computer out either

failure to do these 2 simple steps makes you an idiot imo

oh and dont forget an anti virus app is also essential!!!!! some recommend avg i dont as i use norton cause it actually works (unlike some )

oh and another tip is to use mozilla's firefox browser much better than ie with a built in popup blocker tabbed browsing etc (sp2 will add these to ie so it must be a good thing if microsoft is copying it )

Anti virus apps are only essential for idiots. Adaware is fine for me i run it every few weeks - Are those apps any better than adaware? might run them see if they find anything just for the sake of it... chances are they wont...

As someoone said earlyer in another thread, "preventioin is better than cure", and an av app, no matter how good it is, will not stop you being a idiot.

and no, norton is crapper. Infact I dont think ive ever uninstalled something quicker...

norton finds viruses and deleted them before they even get into my inbox. quite chuffed really, considering the number i've been sent from people in my uni recently.

I'd say Spybot Search and Destroy is better than AdAware by quite a margin. Having said that I had to use a combination of SpyBot, AdAware and Hijack This last weekend to sort out the PC of a pr0n surfing mate of mine... Spyware and viruses (virii if you must) aren't technically the same thing so don't rely on Norton (or anything other AV program) to pick them up!

There are some ways to hijack / install spyware without the user agreeing - especially if the box isn't up to date (and it isn't always easy to keep up to date if you're stuck on 56k!)

while norton or certain versions of it may use up a fair bit of memory and cause slow downs in particular instances it does its job better than most ,i have not had any problems with the nis 2003 version im using now

and i didnt bother reinstalling adaware after my last reformat instead just those 2 apps as mentioned ,and out of those id say spywareblaster is the best as spybot no longer has any spyware to find thanks to it

We've got one little simple solution here that has worked perfectly for us since it arrived. No viruses, no spyware, no worms etc.......

A small (not very powerful) pc as a Linux firewall

    Well i find

First line of defence : Common sense and Zonealarm pro

In case i Fk Up : Norton and Adaware waiting in the wings

In case i use the computer whilst very drunk : 'Norton' Ghost

You just cant beat the feeling of having Norton Ghost. Ive just finished building a pc for my very first paying customer (don't tell them i swapped the 2500-m i ordered on their CC for the 2500 in my machine...shhhh!). One thing i made sure to provide was a bootable DVD with an auto ghost restore bat file of the wway the comp was when i handed it to them. Just in case : see above

My first line of defencce: NAT + firewall biult into router, not really sure how effective this is, but it works very well against all of the recent worms.

From then on, common sence. I really dont understand why all of you use anti-virus apps when you can just not click things in the first place...

Ive tryed a lot of the av apps, my mum and dad wanted one for some reson. AVG has many problems with win98, but works fine on win2k. Norton, mcAffee and trend are ****e. They dont work and just annoy you. mcaffee and zonealarm firewalls cause MORE network problems than they solve, esp if the trial version just happens to run out....

norton ghost is slow, very annnoyingly crappy and slow. When I tryed it, it took 6 hours to clone about 120gb, and then kept failing. Ive tryed it on other drives and other computers with similar results. Better apps for this perpose I recommned are Maxtors free tool - max blast 3 which also does lots of other stuff, and I think powerquest make one aswell, though not tryed it....

Adaware is usefull, but its not something you really need unless you do things you shouldnt...

ahh spyware what an interesting subject...

Ask yourself - how does spyware get there in the first place?

There's two major methods - IE vulnerabilities and attached to programs (Divx codec anyone?)

Make sure your patched with all the latest MS updates and ms java (if you have it).

Adaware gets rid of the vast majority of spyware, CWShredder gets rid of Coolwebsearch and its variants only.

Install iespayad, this changes some ie settings ie unsigned activex stuff and adds a huge ban list of sites (inc ad sites).

That should keep you covered, use a firewall if you dont have a router also.

    My 10p's worth anyway

Surf over to www.grc.com and try 'Shields Up'. Guarantee you will d/l free zonealarm firewall very soon afterwards

I have McAfee subscription service to stay up-to-date with new viruses.

    With Zonealarm

Backed up with Spybot-search and destroy (Free, so no reason not to)- This not only chacks for adware/malware, but also checks tracking cookies and registry entries. Very simple to use, and I like it cos if it removes something you wanted you can restore it easily!

Prevention is a lot easier than cure
